The Announcers Thread

I thought the JR, Kyle Petty and Dale Jarrett Trio worked out good!

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

They were a bit uneven but I like this group the best among all the NBC experiments. Dale Jarrett has the ability to be a lead “play by play” role, in a manner that blends with the others. Petty and Junior’s voices have enough difference in timber and tone that they are recognizable. I wouldn’t say it’s an ideal 3 man booth but it was good.

Funniest thing was during the intro of the team. Junior talked about how little he had been able to say up to that point in the race (due to Letart’s constant stream of chatter) and the guys agreed, with Petty asking how he ever got a word in then Steve was his crew chief. I can’t stand his squeely 120MPH diarrhea mouth. Burton sounds like his county cousin with the same high pitched blabber. Junior isn’t great, but he does his best when just being himself. When he tries to be a “pro” he comes off stiff and uncomfortable.

Like all things in life, use your players at where they are strong. It’s time for NBC to pick the right combos and finish the season at their best. If it were up to me, I would have Rick Allen as the lead, with Dale Jarret and Junior as color in the main booth. Put Steve as your main pit reporter, Kyle and Jeff in the pre-race/infield booth.

No matter HOW they arrange it, you can't escape the fact that they have TOO MANY people trying to talk. If you have REAL pros, you can get away with a three man booth, but not ONE of these guys would be on ANYBODY'S first team as announcers. Any ONE of them might be just fine surrounded by better talent, but as a group they are just lousy. I ran into John Kernan at the US Nationals Saturday. His talents would be put to MUCH better use in NASCAR. Somebody PLEASE bring Jerry Punch and Alan Bestwick back into the fold. Not a NASCAR guy, but even Bob Varsha would be a HUGE improvement.

I'm not hard of hearing/seeing yet.

I can't stand Burton and Letarte, but the Darlington broadcast was MUCH better without Rick Allen.

Dale Jarrett is awesome. He needs to be in the booth full time.

He's good, his dad was better. As far as I'm concerned, Ned Jarrett and Barney Hall are the gold standards. There are some other really good ones, but nobody else is really even qualified to carry their microphones. Amazing how the greatest two announcers in the whole 70 year history of the sport are a couple of small town rural North Carolina boys, one maybe both with no formal broadcast training.

Nothing will ever beat this trio........

did DJ get another face lift?
his eyebrows seem much futher up on his forehead,
than after his first one.

I wonder if they met their "crown jewel" quota today. With the need to blanket every millisecond of the race with commentary, they would momentarily run out of words, and then bounce back with "He's gonna see if he can get him a crown jewel today! You know he would love to take home a crown jewel!“

NBC should jettison Burton and go after Jamie Mac. He will be available next year and I suspect he would be great in the announcer booth. He would be a great start in calming down an announcing team that has WAY too much adrenaline.

What you are hearing is what the director is coaching. Junior never talked like this since he was fined for saying Sh!t after his 5th Dega win.

"Nope. I offered up my services multiple times to multiple people. Oh well. Their loss".

I wonder why?

KDB is a national treasure lmao I just busted out laughing reading his tweet. Full Heel Mode 24/7.

They’re too jacked up and they’re obsessed with constantly trying to predict what’s going to happen - they get it wrong about half the time. They should stay more with giving color on what is happening instead of trying to look like the smartest guy at the track because they can predict the future. There’s a fine line and the good ones know how to walk it.

It definitely still seems like NBC is the JV team.

I much prefer the Fox crew over NBC. The frustrating part is that NBC has so much damn wasted potential. If they got Bestwick to pair with Jr and Letarte as a 3 man booth while telling them to lay off the Monster Drinks and then moving Allen, Burton and Petty to a “Hollywood Hotel” type deal at the track, while also utilizing Dale Jarrett as a analyst for both broadcast/“Hotel”I think that’d be better than what we currently have. ( Also get rid of The Hipster, I learn nothing when he talks. As opposed to DJ every time he speaks during a broadcast I learn something new)The problem I have with NBC is the whole forced storyline and reaction angles they shoehorn into the broadcast. The front stretch interviews are so forced, the Big 3 storyline while I like it is beaten like a dead horse. The racing on the track and drivers/teams are your storyline, no need to amp up the drama. Every race is drama filled, I don’t need a broadcaster TALKING LIKE THIS TO ME ON RACEDAY !!!!!!! to know everything on the track is important. I give credit to most hardcore NASCAR Fans, they are an intelligent bunch when it comes to racing, we can decipher what’s happening on track. Now tell us WHY it’s happening. Until NBC figures that out, I’m not sure they’ll ever be better than the OG’s on the Fox Side. Im afraid when Jeff goes to run HMS, DW retires and they snag Harvick when he’s ready to step away...the gap will widen some more.

I think the head honchos at NBC thought lets make the races more exciting and this is what they came up with. IMO it wouldn't matter what Burton did he thinks he knows what drivers are thinking and he loves to hear himself talk. Allen in the trucks was pretty decent for years, but not now and he comes off so fake with his booming yelling at everything. Add in the fake drama of the chase (we know who's affected with a bad day) don't insult us with this over and over B.S. I quit paying attention to them, it is like somebody having a conversation in the room and I am trying to watch the damn race.

Driver announcers tend to notice when someone is setting up for a pass and they want to tell you about it, those predictions don't always happen. I've noticed that DW and Jr tell you what they would do in a situation, regardless of what the driver is doing and I'm OK with that. But after a while they all start to say the same things because they have to talk for several hours. I think many of the good announcers over the years had the gift of gab, they can talk about a lot of things without excessive repetition. Getting excited is OK when it is for exceptional stuff - which doesn't happen that often in a race (I got a kick out of Jr's slide job but I don't want to hear it all the time).

Anyone else think that Burton's voice sounds like a chain saw revving up? My ears are still hurting after today's race. I can't believe that somebody at NBC ever thought it would be a good idea to put him on the air.

Send your comments about NBC's announcers directly to NBC. People do read these things and if enough people speak up, it could very well make a difference. The main person in charge of the NBC NASCAR coverage at NBC is Jeff Behnke and I am preparing my own comments to him. Later on in the thread are some comments I sent to him several years ago:

also:

Here is a communication I had directly with NBC sports back in 2013 when NBC was about to start covering NASCAR races again. My comments may have been all wet but at least it shows that people do read this stuff (BTW, this was sent before Bob Jenkins died):

>>Re: NBC Sports NASCAR Production Group Ramp-up Suggestions

Sam:

Thanks for the note and suggestions, think you'll be very pleased with our plans as we announce them. I'll make sure Jeff Behnke gets your note. Stay tuned!

Dear Mr. Hughes:

Please forward this e-mail to Mr. Jeff Behnke, NBC Sports Group Vice-President of NASCAR Production –

Dear Mr. Behnke:

I am excited at the prospect of NBC’s return to NASCAR race coverage in 2015 and I know that many of my fellow faithful NASCAR fans share my enthusiasm. I don’t know whether or not you already have your booth announcers for the races lined up but the top choices for many of us (depending upon their availability) are:

Race Call – Allen Bestwick, Rick Allen or Bob Jenkins

Race Commentary:

- Kyle Petty
- Wally Dallenbach
- Andy Petree
- Ricky Craven

I hope this information is helpful to you and thank you for your time.

Regards,

XXXX <<

And finally, one more way to get a message to Jeff Behnke:

Project Assignment : "2018 PyeongChang Olympics", "2020 Tokyo Olympics", "NASCAR America", "NASCAR on NBC", "NBC Thursday Night Football", "Notre Dame Football", "Pro Football Talk", "The Dan Patrick Show"

If most of the 1.5 mile tracks were reconfigured and slightly shortened by 1/4 mile,
the racing would improve and in time may draw some older fans back. It could also attract
new fans. Nascar will shrink and then rise to a level where it can sustain itself and
be one of the top entertainment businesses.
But first they must admit that part of the problem is trying to make good racing with cars
changing design so they can run every where.

The NBC crew was at the Chiefs game last night

Rick Allen: What a throw by Mahomes!
Jeff Burton: THATS RIGHT RICK! THAT WAS A GREAT THROW BY MAHOMES. AND SEE RIGHT NOW IF THE SEASON ENDED KANSAS CITY WOULD BE IN THE PLAYOFFS AS THE 1 SEED. NEW ENGLAND HOLDS THE TIEBREAKER BECAUSE OF THEIR WIN SO EVERY GAME MATTERS FOR KANSAS CITY. THIS IS WHAT THE PLAYOFF FORMAT HAS DONE!!

I have no love for the NBC booth but they behaved a lot better then I thought they would at Kansas.

just swap out pit lane with the tri=oval to make the corners tighter.

Over/Under on how many times the Kenseth/Logano incident is talked about this weekend?

I'll set it at 10 and take the over
I'll go way over.
And take a shot of moonshine every time he tells how important every point is.
