My point is with probably the exception of MTJ who on that list does less than Chase for the fans and media?
Joey - weekly Sirius, several brodcasts
Kurt - A lot of truck races in the booth
Kyle Busch - A couple races in the booth, Owns truck and ARCA teams
Kyle Larson - A ton of grassroots
Kevin - Races from the booth, used to have his own show on Sirius
Ryan - SRX, weekly Sirius, Races from the booth
Chase - SRX, Chili bowl
I think part of the attraction to Chase is that is kind of the anti-version of what many other drivers are. That doesn't mean he is right and they are wrong, just that his "brand" appeals to certain people more than maybe some of the others do. If you want my honest opinion of the drivers above, I'll give it to you.
Logano: A lot of people were turned off by all the sliced bread stuff (not his fault, but perception is perception), Has gotten into a lot of pissing contests with more popular drivers, and comes off as smarmy and uncool.
Kurt: If the Kurt we see today was the Kurt we had gotten twenty years ago, the story would likely be whole lot different, but his past, as well as his brother are his albatross. Drives a Toyota, which like it or not Rev, does turn off a segment of the fan base.
Kyle B: Well, where do you start? To be sure, Kyle does have a contingent of rabid fans, but the majority of the fan base does not like him at all. He is VERY polarizing, and only Dale Earnhardt had enough rabid supporters to outweigh all of his serious detractors. Drives a Toyota. (see above) Has managed to win a couple hundred NASCAR races, and never seem cool doing it.
Kyle Larson: Nice enough guy, but wasn't really moving the needle that much BEFORE his faux pas , and now that will always be an issue for some. If he continues to have seasons like 2021, his popularity could skyrocket. Still has to fight the perception that he would rather be somewhere else.
Kevin: Kevin is also a very polarizing guy. Never was able to capture much of the Dale Earnhardt crowd, years of mediocrity at RCR, outbursts, fights, getting into pissing contests with the sport's last two most most popular drivers, he hasn't done himself any favors in the popularity department. Some days I like Kevin, some days I can't wait for him to retire. Has a legion of fans, but not enough, and no reason to expect that to change this late in his career. If he goes into the broadcast booth, time may change the perception of him for the good.
Ryan: A great guy, really likeable, good with the media. Has pedigree, but not Earnhardt/Elliott pedigree. More winning and championship contention would really help his popularity. Doesn't really have an image, kind of the likeable sidekick.
Martin. Good guy, has had one of the best second halves of a career we have ever seen, but all those years of almost invisibility took their toll. If his Furniture Row success had come 5 years sooner, who knows? Not a real personality guy or media darling, even his pal Dale Jr. gets after him for not showing enough backbone on the track sometimes. One of the more invisible real stars the sport has, and likely too late to change anything now.
Denny: I actually think Denny is becoming a little more likeable and I do appreciate his willingness to discuss the issues in a way most of his fellow drivers are too chicken to. But, he is also Dennis who goes brain dead on the track sometimes, is often a do what I say, not as I do kind of guy, hasn't won a title even though he's had top notch equipment since day one, and sometimes just comes off VERY unlikable in big moments.
Chase: Pedigree, name recognition, success at every step coming through the ranks, Xfinity title in first year focused a LOT of attention towards, him, Jeff Gordon's hand chosen replacement, big time sponsors, makes the playoffs every year, wins enough to keep fans pumped. Appeals to fans who like the strong silent country boy type that aren't media darlings.
