Tony Stewart running over someone?

Well Tony is now officially out of the chase.

don't know where you came up with that. Probably have to win a race and then be able to get a waiver. IMO he isn't out yet and the fat lady isn't singing.

After sitting out last week's race, Stewart is 21st in points. To be eligible for this year's Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, a driver must attempt to qualify for all 26 races leading up to the Chase and be in the top 30 in points.

However, according to NASCAR, for rare instances the requirement can be waived as long as the driver is in the top 30.

Stewart currently has 537 points while 30th-place Michael Annett has 360.

He would've needed a miracle. He's been in contention to win... never times this season. He could've had a shot at Pocono, but that stupid speeding penalty...

It is Tony Stewart. He could have a chance to win any race he is entered.

If he wins a race, Nascar might help him out, but what kind of controversy would that cause if he kicks out someone who would have made it in by points.

Oh , my goodness another expert telling us you can't see nothin' outta the seat of a Sprint Car. OK ...got it.

Now lets focus on the facts and see what the investigators can piece together.

This is a no win situation for all. I imagine they will find Tony not criminally liable but I expect that he will settle a civil suit.

Regan Smith is locked into a four way battle for the points lead in Nationwide, Elliott is at the top of the standings, so he probably needs to focus too, Burton has no pressure on him and will be good if they interview him..and they probably will. that's my best guess anyway.
interesting angle. I was pretty disappointed in the burton choice when I heard it. I suppose you don't show up to a race with a different driver and expect to win it. However given the situation I can't think of a better guy to have in front of the camera in this situation. after all he is called the mayor.

tha whole thing ......as regards criminal or civil legal proceedings will work itself out w/ time.

but will that process take its toll on tony ?
also.....did he get out of his car.....witness 1st hand....tha emt's attempts ta save young ward's life ?

tony's career .....except for broken leg last yr.....has been pretty charmed.... not much " true" turmoil......til now.
how he's able ta cope w/ this trajedy mentally .....may determine his future more than anything else ?

 Jeff Burton, really? He's proven he's more then washed up, god forbid they put a young gun in the car and see what he can do. They signed Parker Kligerman as a test driver, why not see how he runs in quality equipment? It's time for the old fart retirement bus to leave the station. Imagine if Chip Gannassi chose Morgan Shepard to drive the 40 while Sterling was out instead of young up and coming Jamic Mac, he may never have gotten his big break

Long time reader, first time poster....

This is pure speculation but if there would be a civil suit filed I don't see it reaching a courtroom. The reasons for this is that it exposes both sides to some not so nice stuff. As I understand it, New York is a comparative fault state so a percentage of Ward's culpability will need to be determined. If he is found to be 60% (hypothetical number) responsible for his own death by being out on the track then the highest monetary award they can receive is 40% of the initial suit. Meaning...that the most stewart can be found responsible for is that 40%. But then factor in other things such as a dark track, Stewart's visibility being compromised by the car in front of him, etc and that number gets lower and lower. No one wants to see that dragged out in court. It dirties up the name and reputation of both drivers and neither side wants to see that.

If a civil suit is filed I would expect that to be settled rather quickly out of court with a stipulation that evidence is sealed and both sides have a gag order placed on them. Financially this is in the best interests of Ward's family as Stewart has the resources to compensate them well. It will get spun that Stewart is "buying them off" but what people will fail to understand is that Ward's family would probably put themselves at risk of having a lower payoff by going into the courts than they would if an out of court settlement is reached.

Tony is in a really bad predicament right now, but for those writing him off remember where AJ Allmendinger was two years ago. This was a tragedy but Smoke will be back

your not going to win the race with a replacement driver, it just doesn't happen, put the mayor in the car and let him handle the press and the media. mission accomplished.

I wish people would get off the Regan Smith jock. Seriously he isn't that good, and I have this hunch that if he didn't race for JRM people wouldn't give such a damn about him.

Changing my screen name...this is just too much...adios Tony...I'm just not comfortable with this whole thing and I can't go forth with a screen name as such.

I'm pretty sure we all knew a decision on Tony running Michigan would have to be made by today, and I feel the right call was made.
But I was also sure we'd hear from Tony himself revealing that decision.

I'm still scratching my head on his silence.
So, I don't blame you on your consideration/decision on a screen name change.
At all.
I'm just as confused as you.

They probably said that about McMurray and Harvick too.

I was thinking the same thing.
But if I recall correctly, Harvick already had 2 races under his belt.

Mcmurray busted right outta the gate in Charlotte, no?

Usually sponsors are consulted on replacement drivers, time permitting., and they may have asked for a name driver. I'm sure the media focus will be intense and Burton can definitely handle it.

I suspect Nascar will give Tony a pass on not attempting the race. So far this year they cave Denny Hamlin a pass on his eye problem, and said as early as March that they would give Kurt Busch one if there was a glitch in him getting back to Charlotte while doing the double. If they didn't and he somehow managed to win the last race before the chase, it would look so bad for them PR wise.

Yeah he only won the Southern 500 driving for single car furniture row racing on older tires. The guy blows

Good analysis! Happy that you've decided to post something :)

Yeah. The longer he sits out, the more one could be concerned about him psychologically. The sooner he gets back into the car and gets back into the groove of his normal life, the better.

Of course, he could just be waiting for the investigation to be over and be cleared from any wrong doing. I don't know I'm not a lawyer.
He is free to go and do whatever he pleases. There is not enough evidence to arrest him, so the "investigation" shouldn't interfere with his ability to race.

Yeah but it just seems like good form, doesn't it? I mean it's just a pc pr dance people have to do. He may be ready to hit the track and move on but might have somebody counseling him that it could be seen as callous, for example.

He could also be softer than we give him credit for and be hurting and unsure of what he wants.
Or anywhere in between.
Who knows?
I for one figured he'd sit this one out and possibly all of em till the investigation is over at least.

Edit: I realize I didn't leave any room for the possibility that he's a murderer here. I guess that's because I find it damn near completely out of the realm of possibility at this point.

I understand the reasons why he would choose not to race, I'm just saying he is not legally being prevented from racing or traveling. I'm sure it's all a combination of PR tactics and crisis-management, along with him dealing with psychological trauma and wanting to stay out of the media, etc. etc.

It's late, sorry if I read you wrong.

So what's the point of requiring you have to qualify for all 26 races? Everybody and their brother can get a waiver from NASCAR, why just say "You have to be 30th or higher in points to get in."

I understand your comparison but the reality is AJ willingly took whatever pills he decided to take. Tony didn't willingly ask for a kid to come down and stand in the middle of the track and put himself in harms way.

He was about 6 inches too far over the yellow line to beating your boy Tony at Talladega.

I hope this doesn't sound snarky toward Tony, that is not the intent. I hope he proves me wrong.

But he battles Father time, as well injury recovery, and the fallout from this latest new set of problems. I fear that the window to ever be dominant in Cup again is getting narrow.
The time frame needed to recover from the physical and mental toll could just be to much for the biological clock.

I still think that he has a lot of good racing left in him, but returning to champion form will be tough. If he ever does I would think it would be his greatest accomplishment ever based on the obstacles.

Has anyone seen this:http://empirenews.net/nascar-tony-s...g-after-accident-that-kills-competing-driver/
I really hope this magazine is a tabloid and not actual. That will be a tremendous loss for racing if true.

Rusty Wallace, on his verified Twitter account: For the record, I have neither spoken with Tony Stewart nor AP regarding his retirement. Any such statement is a hoax.

Doesn't sound snarky at all, just sounds like reality to me. To be honest, I think Tony's championship winning days were over even before all this happened. He has only visited VL once since July 2012, age and injury have caught up. Add this incident to the equation, and I think it'll all be too much to overcome to ever be seriously competitive again.

Funny/ assume you are joking.

Tony has had a win every year that he has run in cup including 2013. He hasn't had a win since his accident one year ago. He has finished in the top 11 every year except for last year when he missed half the season.

He still has a lot of talent to put out!

He's at the age where being in great shape could have extend his competitive career. We'll see, but I think you're right.

I guess we'll never know for sure, but I think both of those streaks would have ended this year even if this incident hadn't took place.
