Tony Stewart running over someone?

@KevinWI and @BobbyFord - easy, fellas. I know I'm not the boss, and I know everybody's amped up for obvious reasons, but this is really not the time for us to be at each other's throats.

I just got done reading this whole thread and I am in total shock. I can't believe this just happened - and I can't believe Tony is actually planning to race later today. How in the world do you get back behind the wheel of a race car not even 24 hours after you run someone over with one (not saying he did it on purpose)? Unreal.

R.I.P. Kevin Ward.
Hey! Don't try to bring civility into this! Arguing on the internet is serious business.

You are very right. Thanks Mr. Greg...

I don't get it. He's too far back to make it in on points so his only realistic shot at the Chase would be to win a race. Say he decides not to sit out even just this one event and he goes out and wins like he has to. How callous would the post-race festivities look?

He should sit out the Watkins Glen race as a sign of respect to the dead driver. But, Stewart has no class so he'll race.

I agree, but just browsing here and /r/NASCAR, people who seem to be coming into this late (and this isn't a passive aggressive slight on Bobby or anybody else) seem to be of the opinion that Ward ran into the path of Stewart. Whereas people who stayed up and followed the news as it happened seem to be more inclined to believe that Ward tried to get out of the way at the last minute and Stewart hit him regardless. Maybe something to do with the earlier headlines or something. I actually think, reading some of the later opinions coming in on this now, there is a chance Stewart may race tomorrow because it seems like public opinion is shifting towards Stewart.

But, like you said, it's crappy all around, no matter what you think happened.
It sure seems that way.

It's tough to tell since the video shifted momentarily but right before Ward gets hit it looks like he tries to shield/brace himself for impact. Maybe he realized he had wandered too far down the track, maybe he realized Tony would try to rattle his cage a bit. Very difficult to tell either way.

Yeah, just like the Shepherd-Logano dispute and other things, the video is actually so crappy and inconclusive that both sides (and this shouldn't really come down to "sides" but it is what it is) can look at it and see what they already believed.

Just saw the video. I think if Stewart hadn't mashed the gas right before he hit him the guy probably would've survived. RIP

Stewart Haas Racing Statement ->

"A tragic accident took place last night during a sprint car race in which Tony Stewart was participating. Tony was unhurt, but a fellow competitor lost his life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We’re still attempting to sort through all the details and we appreciate your understanding during this difficult time."

Still planning to race? They're getting the car ready.

It does surprise me a little that he is racing today. But, maybe he feels it is the only way to start his healing process. It has to be tough on him, though.

Just saw this on the news this morning. Terrible deal. I dont know what happened but I dont think it was intentional. My guess is that Stewart races today but we will see. You can bet he has some lawyers already advising him on what and what no to do.

@jeff_gluck

Greg Zipadelli tells me it’s “business as usual today” and Tony Stewart will race at Watkins Glen.

Just a creepy coincidence but Stewart starts 13th today and the car number of the driver he ran over was also 13.

I think Tony racing today sends the wrong message but maybe that's just me. I don't totally blame him for what happened but I don't feel he's the victim overcoming something by being allowed to drive his cup car.

Frankly, it will be uncomfortable for me watching him on the track today.

I agree.

In the video I saw it's hard to say exactly what happened. Did he get hit by the front wheel? When Tony hits the gas the rear end moves away from Kevin.

I have no problem with Tony racing today. Every driver knows there's the possibility it's their last green flag.

I have always believed that getting out of the car before the rescue/track personal arrive and the field is under control isn't a good idea. Walking down and throwing your helmet or gloves and pointing at your butt while race cars go by at 50-60 mph just feet away also fits the 'not a good idea' pattern. Neither is throwing punches when the guy is wearing a full face helmet.
Nascar should institute and other series follow a stay in the car and remain buckled in rule until track personal arrive, of course this wouldn't apply if the cars on fire.

These guys are of a different breed. I don't know how he'd be able to climb behind the wheel today after last night's on track tragedy. Personally, out of respect for his fellow racer I'd think he'd step aside today but maybe that's his way of dealing with it? Maybe that's the way most any of these racers would react? I just don't know.

He got hit by the right rear wheel and got twisted up by the tire like in a blender because Stewart mashed the gas.

What a thing to wake up to. The kid broke rule 1, stay in your car. Rule 2, don't run into traffic it's dark and hard to see someone in a dark fire suit. IMHO tony probably never even seen he kid until he hit him. Yes it's a tragedy, but let's cut all speculation until we get all the facts. NASCAR will survive, Tony will race,SHR will keep running.

I'm late, but WTF Tony? I'm at a total loss for words right now. RIP to the driver who passed away. We need to let this play out and let all the facts come to light, but from the outset the circumstances sounds very disturbing.

Okay... in watching this video I have to believe Tony Stewart should face charges. He hit the gas and when I paused it his wheels were turned right. I know he didnt mean to hit him or hurt him but he definitely didnt try to avoid him. I think he was trying to scare him and ****** up... This is just craziness... So sad for everyone involved.

I completely understand what you're saying. But racing is a business and to be blunt, life goes on. Both Rudd and Elliot raced the following week after Rudd spun coming into the pits pinning and killing one of Elliot's pit crew. Nascar raced the week after Sr died.
Unfortunately there's no time outs.

As of 8:00 am this morning, a NASCAR reporter on CNN is reporting that Tony is back in Watkins glen and will be racing the 14 in the cup race today. They also said that he will be giving a press conference at 1 pm, just before the start of the race.

I am dumbfounded by this. IMHO, the LAST two things Tony should be doing is:

A: Racing the 14 in the cup race today.

B: Holding a press conference at ANY time let alone just before the cup race. Any lawyer worth his salt would be telling him to just STFU!

In my opinion, Tony should be showing respect to Kevin's memory by NOT racing today and just loading the 14 in the hauler.

Rudd's incident is entirely different. It's not like Rudd had an issue with the pit crew member he killed when the car lost control. Earnhardt died during competition. He was not run over by another driver.

If I accidentally killed a guy like that, I wouldn't be able to get out of bed the next day let alone race.

You could tell what happened? I watched that video half a dozen times and all I could tell was that Tony's car hit the kid and the kid went flying. I have no idea if he was hit by the back or front tire.

There was absolutely no reason for Tony to gun his engine as he was moving past Kevin Ward besides giving him an F-you gesture with his car. Typical road rage Tony at his best.
I'm sure Tony had no intentions of actually hitting Ward, but what he did was extremely reckless and caused the death of the young man.
I hope the Ward family sue Tony for every damn thing he has.

The fact that he's even going to race today is unbelievable. What a POS.

For anyone that hasn't seen the video see post 229 on this thread.

Tragic...Stewart has a long history of showing his bi-polar ass , on track and off, which any DA worth his salt could demonstrate if charges were pressed. Looked deliberate to me, but I hope it wasn't.

What a shame, a true shame.

I, for one, will wait and let the investigators do their job. I'm sure when they have covered all the bases, looked at any video available they will let us know what happened.

For the present, I will keep Kevin's family in my thoughts and prayers.
I will also keep Tony in my thoughts --- he will have to bear this burden for the rest of his life.

Yeah, he ran someone over just because they pointed their finger at him.......makes sense. For crying out loud......

I feel the same.

Highly doubt that it was at all intentional.

I have a dirt racing friend who was at the track during this accident, apparently knew ward. So sad.

Yes, it was an accident. But why did Tony gun his engine as he got to the kid? That's the reason it happened. Tony could have just motored on past and nothing would have happened.

Can't want to hear Tony's explanation for that.

Keep being a Stewart fan, bro. Just push it down and pretend Tony isn't responsible.
