Pocono use to have the best racing. That is not me saying that; even though I witnessed 30 straight races in person; Stock Car Racing magazine had an article in the mid eighties saying Pocono was the most competitive track.
I know a lot of you are rolling your eyes. Just check racing-reference and see how many lead changes the races use to have.
The track is still in Pennsylvania, still a 2.5 mile tri angle, still asphalt. So what has changed to make Pocono a track where most people have the opinion it is boring and should lose a race.
Well the only common denominator left is the cars, back when cars were not works of aerodynamic wizardry. They weren't sucked to the ground, skewed sideways, each side of the body a different shape.
I lived and saw those races with my own eyes and the racing was tremendous. 40 to 50 lead changes a race, without any gimmicks to artificially close up the field. A guy would get the lead down the long frontstrech and lose it on the Long Pond straight and then another pass would happen out of the tunnel turn. Bring that racing back and the stands and infield wouldn't be empty like yesterday. Watching Richard Petty run the tunnel turn was pure artistry, he loved that turn.
