What should NASCAR do with Qualifying?

I’m on board with that. You could have one drawing for position and one for pit selection if you wanted to add to the drama.

Equal opportunity for all ! whats not to like ? They could do a one hour show for the drawing, give the fans at the track some access. Hell, they could even have a fan draw for their driver

2 short heat races day of the race. The lineup would be based on average practice finishing order for all sessions. No provisionals allowed.

I just want to give a huge thank you to the drivers for not playing in their reindeer games this past weekend.
Drivers and crew chiefs are doing what they get paid to do - be as competitive as allowed by the box they're stuck in. I may not like what they're doing in the least but I fully understand why their doing it.

After "the show" that was qualifying @ Texas today and Fontana 2 weeks ago, what does everyone think they should do with qualifying?

I don't see returning to single car as anything I'd be overly excited to watch with "the package" parachute amount of downforce. Even though it would legitimize the process. So, NASCAR has really backed themselves into a corner here imo.

Personally, I like the idea of turning qualifying into an entire practice session, and assigning positions based on top 10 consecutive lap average.

What does everyone else think?
I think that's exactly why so many have lost interest in NASCAR.Gimmicks.Whats next, drivers will be taken to a remote location outside the track and blinfolded. They have one hour to find a qualifying eligibility coin hidden in the front grandstand.Once they find the coin ,and are then eligible, they must juggle a fruit of their choice while singing Michael Jackson songs before eating five track dogs with chili.Once they have completed these steps they have to run to turn four from the pits and quote three lines from War and Peace then it's on to the...........
. Single car qualifying. The KISS method.Worked for years.

hope they go back to single car like O'Donnell is talking about and if they use the ghost car that shows the line and speed the other driver runs it is the best situation for qualifying IMO. I'm sure we will get the stages at the road courses that really suck for races that pit strategy is usually one of the most important factors about the race.

They could do single car qualifying with multiple cars on the track if they ensure space between them. A light at the end of pit road could time the spacing. But I'm pretty sure the teams would figure out a way to game that system too.

That's silly, Just eat enough chocolate bars until you find a golden ticket.

“We’re being put in this situation.” Everyone wants to be a victim. Steve acting like his show business focused qualifying rules didnt create this monster.

One quality I like about Steve Phelps is that even with his marketing and sales background, this isn't his approach. He's the guy who said that NASCAR "lost our way" and other remarks to that effect. Even though I think that's a harsh characterization, the candor inspires a lot more confidence than stonewalling from figures like O'Donnell. To hear him tell it, everything is always as great as can be, and when it changes radically, that's even better. Anyone who offers a differing opinion is a traitor who should get lost, and the root of all problems is dissent.

I really don't know where you guys come up with this stuff

Single car “won’t be popular with some of the owners, but unfortunately, we’re being put in this position,” O’Donnell said.

Just have 2 practices then qualify and lock up the cars for the start of the race.

The issue is the "we're being put in this position" blame shifting. No, you put yourselves in this position due to your own choices. Own it. The accountable answer is "We didn't anticipate the way group qualifying at drafting tracks would proceed with the new rules package. We're going to fix it and get it right, bear with us." That defuses the dissatisfaction and demonstrates actual leadership, rather than trying to cast blame at outside sources or down the food chain. It's simple, but requires a level of confidence and security. My opinion is Phelps has it, and Jim France likely has it too, at least behind closed doors when dealing with stakeholders. Brian France is a prime example of someone who didn't have it at all.

how do you know it wasn't the owners idea in the first place? Pretty easy to access blame, but if you don't know all of the facts in the situation, it's good business practice to keep your mouth shut I have found. Besides the owners wanting it, it is the teams and the drivers who are playing chicken on pit road.

O’Donnell replied “absolutely” when asked whether he was angered by the incessant controversy and openly wondered whether drivers were trying to subvert the process.
“I think it’s ridiculous, candidly,” he said. “I know the drivers did not like this qualifying before the season. Part of you says, ‘Are we doing this on purpose to get rid of it?’ I know it can be done. I know we have the best drivers in the world and crew chiefs to figure it out. We seem to want to outdo each other, and that results in sitting on pit road.
O’Donnell said any switch would be met by resistance from team owners who lobbied for group qualifying to help hold down costs. A move to single-car qualifying would mean teams focusing on more expensive and specialized parts and pieces.
“If we have to go back to single car, simple,” he said. “We’ll do that. It won’t be popular with some of the owners, but unfortunately, we’re getting put in this position.”

Some big name owners might get peeved but smaller team owners will have their team highlighted for 2 laps. Thats two laps more than what press they recieve on Sunday.

NASCAR has moved action off the track and into the Pits -- doesn't matter if it is jockeying for Pit Road parking spots during Quals or handing out Pit Road penalties during the race.

The only negative to them going back to single car now is the half dead motors they're running. Those old videos of these guys hauling the mail around the 1.5s for 2 laps are so sick to watch. Who in the hell thought that was boring?!

Never again, unfortunately.

It may indeed have been the owners' idea. It may have been the drivers. It may have been somebody here.

Regardless of who's idea it is, only the leader can make the decision to implement it. He's where the buck stops, regardless of who thought it up.
