Carl Edwards retires

Did Kelly Ripa ever get a full-time partner for her show? I know Carl has co-hosted with her in the past. I bet he winds up with a gig like that at some point soon.
100% Exactly what I was thinking. Mike Bagley also brought it up on SiriusXM. He'd be perfect.

WOW, I didnt see this coming

I have to say I am bit bummed that Carl is walking away .

Some folks are saying be cautious in using the R word with Carl. Guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Oh God.

Saurez is going to do a fine job. Watching he and Jones fight it out will be fun to see.

Sad to see one of best talents in the field walk away like that. I remember Edwards talking about those cards he handed out while sleeping in his car. He invested everything into being a NASCAR driver and he's been one of the most successful drivers at that. A fitness freak and a likeable guy that everyone in the garage loved, he had his moments, but he's had a heck of a career and I wish the best for him and his family.

This makes no sense. The guy is is at his prime career wise. Maybe Gibbs is forcing him out to make room for DS.

This is not aimed at you specifically, but I wish people here would stop being so knee-jerk all the time.

Reality: Carl stepped away low-key on his own terms and has Coach's blessing.

Racing-Forums reaction: Coach must be forcing him out!!

Everybody stop and take a deep breath once in awhile.

TIMMYS HOT TAKE

I am shocked! by this that it is carl but I cant blane him. If i was 37 and had a chance to retire and live comfortably i would do it and so would all of we

i bet if nascar was just pure racing (ala 70s 80s, early 90s) carl would not have retired

its not just racing its the sponsor apppearances the autograph sessions, the media days that are forced upn you that tire you out

I agree as there is so much to being a driver that is not required by athletes in the stick and ball sports realm. After about 1 day of kissing ass and smiling while getting my picture taken plus signing autographs for little Johnny I would go postal. God bless all the people that either enjoy that sort of thing or at least tolerate it but it is not for me.

Smokes let's go

Wow, sad. Carl was one of the most marketable drivers out there. Look for the exodus of fans to continue.

Good point and Carl has something that a lot of people don't in that he liked by both men and women.

So if this really is it for Carl, is he a Hall of Fame driver? As of now he's 27th on the career wins list.

Absolutely as Lennie Pond and Ron Bouchard will be inducted in the class of 2028.

Balderdash.

I read this as "Good point and Carl has something that a lot of people don't in that he likes both men and women" and thought holy **** the surprise retirement isn't even the biggest news of the day anymore.

Phew.

I feel bad for his fans more than anything. Atleast Jeff & Tony got their farewell tours.

I can't remember the first farewell tour but they are relatively new as in the past when a driver, like a stick and ball athlete, retired he wasn't feted everywhere he went. I guess Brian Scott's fans got ripped off too....:)

I really like Carl, he'd make a great interviewer like someone already suggested.

Maybe this is like a mental health thing? We all know the Nascar season is a grind. He always seems so up and chipper when interviewed. I do wish him every happiness.

Phew.

LMAO and I can't even proof read what I type correctly!

It could be the Rosberg syndrome. Nicro Rosberg retired after he won the F1 championship last November.

That is a really good point. I feel dumb now
Don't feel dumb, in a pure racing sense I'm sure JGR would rather have Jones on the 19 and Suarez in the 77. Clearly they didn't know this was going to go down when they went to all the effort to get Jones to Cup with Furniture Row.

My updated interest in NASCAR

I don't know if I would want to put my heart and soul in the current version of NASCAR. I think he was pretty disgusted by the way the last season ended.

Carl's contract up after '17, no negotiation taking place? Jones has a 1 year deal with FRR.
Suarez is in line after Jones and then who? the future is moving fast. JGR & TRD know the
importance of staying on the crest of the wave.
Carl adds 1 & 1 and decides to tell JGR to take a flying flip!
That's my opinion.

I thought Carl signing with JGR would prolong his career and propel him into another decade of success. I guess having to be Kyle and Denny's teammate could wear anyone out...
