2019 Auto Club Speedway --Auto Club 400 -- Pre-Race Thread

Where did Kurt qualify?
He was the first car out at the start of the second round. He ran a lap by himself with no one else on the track, either to get in his way or to assist him with a draft. The other 23 came out with 1:10 to go as a big pack, drafted together, and destroyed him.

St. Kurt the Martyred.

I know it is complicated but there is technology to prevent this type of fiasco.

1. Teams need to buy stop watches or good smartphones .
2. Document time required to reach the flag during practice .
3. Have a team meeting to ensure everyone on the team establishes the latest time to safely exit pit road
4. Buy some radio headsets.
5. Hire spotters that can tell time and communicate "go now" to the driver.

Nope, put the blame where it belongs, the teams
It’s not the teams.. it’s nascar! The drivers don’t want this racing they don’t want this qualifying it’s stupid.. relying on others for drafts and sh*t it’s just corny man..spoilers as high as the Statue of Liberty no HP! The drivers was so happy when they got that HP back.. it’s just to much bs going on ..

Miller is your problem. Pretty acerbic dude with an asinine attitude -- his weak attempts to cast blame and evade responsibility while ridiculing the Drivers who have been incentivized into waiting for the draft to form...

I watch NASCAR for my pastime -- but this guy has turned Qualifying into a waste of time.

Whatever France is "in charge" -- please Remove and Replace this impediment to NASCAR Greatness. :)

THIS EXACTLY. The fact that there are 12 Cup level crew chiefs that can't figure out what the absolute last dead second you can leave pit road and still get a lap that counts is BEYOND embarrassing, and it's even worse for me because this is TWICE now that HMS teams have yacked this up. It isn't too hard to figure out why their cars are slow when they can't even do basic math.

Kyle Busch will drive it and win with it :pbjtime:

There will be a rule change thanks to the knuckle heads today. Like Jeff Gordon said, sit in your pit stall until you want to go then you cannot stop. Matter of fact require a minimum pit road speed according to track size. Its either that or any track 2.0 and over goes single car.

Scott Miller, "Having the last 12 cars wait until they couldn’t get a time posted on the board and kind of making a mockery out of the qualifying is not what we expect for our fans. It’s a little bit on us in that we hoped things would go better than that."

Scott “Show Business” Miller makes it clear NASCAR thinks single-car qualifying is just the worst and that they’ll exhaust every option before going back to it, but tweaks will certainly soon be coming.

Personally, I don't disagree with anything Scott Miller said there, and if I were in his position, probably would have said the exact same thing.

“we really dont want to go back to what makes the most sense and is proven to work”

IMO they should do single car quals but include a 4 tire change in the lap.

Kurt Busch put his hand in the fire and got burned for Scott Miller's circus Qualifying format -- these Drivers aren't stupid.

Disagree, everyone is playing under the same rules, figure it out. Its amazing the teams or the manufactuer's didnt have a plan even if it may have hurt the lead car. Terrible management by the Crew Chiefs

They may HAVE to go back to single car qualifying, but if they do, I for one will no longer be watching. I just don't have that kind of time to waste, and I have no patience to sit there and listen to all of the broadcast chatter that fills all the time nothing of interest is happening, which is 85% of it.

So you wont watch single car runs because theres too much chatter and nothing is happening (which is false because there
is a car on track during the entire session), but you watch group qualifying where there is more time spent with cars cooling off on pit road doing nothing and broadcasters chatting about unrelated topics?

Agree 100%, and if I were NASCAR, I would have thrown out ALL of their qualifying times and made them start in the back. In fact, if they want to fix this, just make a rule that if you do not complete at least one qualifying lap in the session, you will be DNQ'd unless you wrecked or blew up the car or something.

I don't trust anyone who approaches the situation as if the only problem with that farcical mockery of a qualifying procedure is that they didn't make it across the line in time to turn laps in the final round. That was just the final insult, the chaser to a toxic brew.

12 drivers didn't screw up and fail to make a lap, there ain't no damned way. Everybody ( including the fans at home) knew the time required to make the lap.

I can get behind that

Drivers rely on communication. Crew Chiefs are to blame.
