Has Jimmie Johnson (at age 43) lost a step?

INCREDIBLE observation! You, sir, are one of the very best critics I have seen to date! Concise, straight to the point, and certainly not a word wasted or out of place.
With your analysis, Cliff Daniels and Jimmie Johnson will finally solve all of their problems and will rise to the occasion and they will forever be indebted to you and your fantastic commentary!

I’ll tell you if this place had a POST OF THE YEAR Award, you could stop the voting now. This would be the winner hands down. Such an insightful, compelling and passionate post. I’m going to be thinking and deconstructing this Pulitzer worthy mass of words my entire day at work today.

Your welcome.. glad I could help

oh. goody, now that we have Jimmie retired and gone, I wonder what he will do in retirement. Will he continue to torture himself with marathon runs, maybe run a sports car, take up flying? Sail the world like Carl? Broadcasting? Disappear off of the face of the earth? Come back and win a championship driving for Joe Gibbs because we all know driving a Yoder fixes everything.

He’d still be washed up in a JGR Yoder

Very disappointed people are calling Jimmie's head to hang it up. I hope he sticks around Petty style or at least until after 2021 or after 2022.

Tough break getting caught up in that wreck for JJ. Strong drive all night till that happened. His throwback paint scheme was working it's magic.

He's going to need some dominoes to fall his way at Indy to make the playoffs, or win the dam thing.

I can't imagine first year sponsor Ally is loving it, but maybe they are enjoying the extra exposure being on the cut line.

Jimmie had a strong run at Darlington. I think it's obvious he's lost a step, but he still is capable of winning a race or a few more races.

Car definitely has but has gotten better. Chevy as a whole has stepped up. Maybe Jimmie has but I wouldn’t count his career as over. He’s still capable when he has the car.

The 48 car has low key been fast for months. He's had top 10 cars the last 6-8 races. Wrecks wrecks wrecks.

Jimmie is more than capable of winning races. He's lost a step, but Jimmie down a step is still almost as good as anyone. If Hendrick gets their game back to what it was, or if the Hendrick cars can match Gibbs next year, I'd still take Jimmie over anyone except maybe Kyle Busch..and that's a biiiiiig maybe. He was so much better at winning races than anyone today that a past his prime 48 was still as good as the peaking Gibbs cars from 14-16.. and who forgets Kyle Busch downright panicking at Martinsville at the notion of the 48 winning. If Jimmie can pull off a few wins next year going into the playoffs, he'll be considered a contender, or even a favorite

Jimme IMO at his zenith was as close as we will get to Tiger Woods being in NASCAR in terms of how when it was playoff time, he was on every competitor's mind. He was in the those guy's heads more than they will care to admit.

Well, some have more or less admitted. :D

Denny, Brad too. He was totally in Brad's head too, but Brad was able to beat him, so that went to Brad's head. I've low key learned to love those Penske guys

In 2008 I remember being on the phone with my buddy after Dover saying "Carl Edwards is going to win the championship this year right? You think he's going to win the championship this year don't you?" I remember literally pacing in my basement saying "Nobody wins three in a row man, Carl's had the best cars and and Jimmy isnt unbeatable, especially going for three in a row"

He was sure in my head

I may have to put a Vegas wager on JJ at Indy this week, might be worth the risk. I just have a gut feeling about it. :idunno:

Unlike Gordon who was just money at Indy, Jimmie has always been checkers or wreckers there. I'd say he's overdue for a good run, but I just don't know how the aero package is going to fit into the puzzle.

Something isn't right here. I've just noticed that there's this thread, and yet, THERE IS NO JIMMIE JOHNSON APPRECIATION THREAD. Lol.

An interesting perspective on Jimmie Johnson, and thankfully free of opinions stated as facts about GOAT rankings...

Longest Active Playoff Streaks

San Antonio Spurs - 22 years (5 NBA championships)

Jimmie Johnson - 15 years (7 Cup Series titles)

Pittsburgh Penguins - 13 years (3 Stanley Cups)

New England Patriots - 10 years (3 Super Bowl wins)

Los Angeles Dodgers - 6 years (0 World Series titles)

Who's 2nd in active playoff streak in the Cup Series? Harvick?

Spurs have been low-key one of the strongest dynasties of the last 25 years. Pop and Duncan were so good.

Menard on the front row ... I am thrilled.

I wonder if the Wood Brothers dug up some of their old laughing gas parts?
