busch clash

He doesn’t qualify for entry. End of story

He doesn't qualify based on arbitrary rules that they change every year based on who or how many people they want in the race. It's an exhibition race no one is losing anything by allowing him to run it.

This logic just makes no sense to me any fool can run a points paying race and potentially cost someone a championship, but you wont let a hall of Famer run an exhibition race?

I'm willing to bet more fans will be "hey Tony's running that race I'm going to watch that and see how he stacks up". No one is going to say "well I was going to watch that race, but not anymore since they allowed tony in"

From the interview that I saw, Tony said he approached NASCAR and inquired about his eligibility in the clash, and that NASCAR never got back to him with an answer. I haven't seen an article or interview that gives me the impression that Smoke is hounding NASCAR about an exemption (I am happy to be corrected.) I think this is mountains and molehills.

LOL so they should add to the qualifications And if your name is Tony Stewart?

For an exhibition race that any high profile driver or hall of Famer wants in on. I'd let Gordon, Jr, Tony, Edwards,....

You have nothing to lose and all to gain.

Isn't this the same sanctioning body that allowed the 14 in the clash with a different driver the year tony hurt his back because the team earned it? Seriously the rules are completely arbitrary from year to year

It wasn't for Hall of Famers.. so no. And the 14 deal was for a legitimate reason, not a just because I want to.

eh not being in the clash will just give Tony and Leah more time to hangout at her Lake Havasu house and get ready to enjoy their new boat.

They would be falling all over themselves if it was Jr or Gordon

Neither of them is dumb enough to ask.
How do we know they haven't asked? Only reason we know Tony did is because he came out and said he asked and they refused to reply

Available palletized at Costco outlets everywhere.

Jr showed up recently and ran a points paying Xfinity race at Darlington and it was all hail Jr time.
Different eligibility rules. No need to ask, just fill out the paperwork.

Tony owns an X team but no one has yet offered a reason why he doesn't field a car for himself in the X road course race.

Tony Stewart could have been a competitor in that race... all he had to do was submit the entry form.

To me it's very clear how are you going to get fans excited about watching an exhibition race with the same guys they watch all the time (just less of them), on the same tracks they race on, with the same cars? The only difference is the race is shorter. Seriously the only thing that gets people watching it is it's the first race of the season and they're dying to see any racing.

If you want to make an exhibition race draw attention make these guys eligible, make last years truck, Xfinity and arca champions eligible. You need to do something different that's why you have exhibition races!

yep, but he couldn't at a non points race that isn't known for it's ability to draw attention from fans. And that is my point all along. Nascar has waived rules many times. Sometimes it makes sense. The race is a pretty nothing race and it should be open to anyone as far as I am concerned.

Fine, change the rules. They have before. That's different from an unjustifiable exemption.

We complain when they waive rules and we complain when they don’t.

Enlighten me on the last time qualifications for The Clash or All-Star Race, after they were posted, were changed to allow a non-qualified driver to enter?

I’m plenty enough excited. No need to bring in the geriatric theatrics.

Stewart shouldn't be in the Clash. The event has little credibility to begin with, but the move to the road course provides a boost of genuine intrigue. Yes, they have fiddled with the elegibility rules umpteen times to get who they wanted in, but that was for current drivers. Turning it into a senior tour invitational doesn't help.

Smoke should enter the points race there instead as an open team. That would be cool and NASCAR would be stupid to try to stop that.

I usually watch the clash but because they moved it to the road course I'm not interested in it anymore. I will watch a road course points race but I'm not interested in a non points road course race. But, I will be tuned in next Sunday to watch HMS and Chevy dominate the Daytona 500.

all it takes is "past champion". That has been used for many things over the years for entries into events. "Daytona pole sitter" is probably the most ridiculous excuse to get a driver in the race

When they let the 14 run the clash with backup driver

Not the same scenario. This is no different than Ty running for 23XI.
Say what? This whole thing was about driver eligibility, not once did it mention the team.

If we applied your logic Bubba should be eligible because the 23 was the 13 charter, which had Ty Dillion win a stage last year thus making Bubba eligible for the clash this year. And the 20, 42 and 14 should also be in because those teams had drivers with them last year when those drivers qualified to become eligible

Yeah, I have to agree with you on this specific point

If Tony isn’t eligible to race, and it’s listed in the rules you had to have been a competitor in the last year I can’t see what the argument is. The rules are the rules, seems Tony wasn’t aware of it before he shot his mouth off. I think Jr is a smart enough guy to at least have read the rules on entry before he would whine to the media about not getting back to him.

Found this on the website, I didn’t bother to look on the previous pages because this thread has quickly devolved into “push rod size” territory but it specifically states on the second bullet point “Past Busch Clash Champion who competed full time in 2020.” I don’t see how any interpretation could be favorable to Tony, unless I missed him running full time in Cup last year.

Looking forward to tomorrow night! Great to see cars back on track and a new Clash format, with or without Stewart. Fingers crossed because the weather in Daytona looks like crap all week. Which brings up the thought, will they run rain tires?

Heck it's an exhibition race lets just turn on some sprinklers in a few turns anyways. Make sure they need those wet weather tires

Bobby Hillin Jr. is also ineligible.

Stewart wasn't going too...old school and all that :sarcasm:
