2022 Silly Season

Execution is everything with it.

Are teams losing money because of the number location? This entire thing is idiotic.

Making the sponsors bigger won't do a single thing when the "sport" (and I use that term loosely to describe modern day NASCAR) is hemorrhaging viewers faster than MSNBC.

Can Tony Khan please start a racing series?

I'm not complaining over number placement, you can all you want to.

The other reason this is idiotic, wanting to make the sponsors more prominent and the numbers less prominent, the number is the only way to identify these cars anymore when the sponsors and paint schemes change every week.

This "sport" literally gets harder to follow each year.

why don't ya go ahead and pull the plug. Put yourself out of your misery

"It’s really not that big of a deal. Get over it."

That's one of the things that have this sport on the brink of irrelevance. You can laugh all you want, but when people that used to be fans talk to me about it, this is EXACTLY the kind of things they bring up to me. I don't have to lead them to it, they can't WAIT to tell me how much they have hated all the changes the last twenty years. That not only no longer watch or attend, they can't figure out why I still do. The sponsors may WANT it, but no fans, no sponsors either.

Number placement is not as important as number size. In Indycar I can never find the number or read it before they have moved on to another shot. That makes it hard for me to get invested in any one driver so I watch very little.

New, different and fun isn't in some peoples vocabulary. They do tend to flock together as in misery loves company

He's still scored more points than Erik Jones to this point as well in the 43 last year.

FYI.

Anyways, Denny knew the team was going to be an uphill battle. Bubba I feel over estimated what he was given in his early season predictions. He's shown improvement, but once again he has three primary weaknesses.

- He gets in his own head.
- Lap to Lap consistency, at times.
- Road course improvement.

He could be a top 15 driver, but the issue is that the raw ability he has needs to be ironed out. The article is great though and covers all the bases.

A couple of things. I would dare say the 43 had a LOT more sponsorship last year than this year.

I'm not sure being a top 15 driver is really going to cut it with an organization of this caliber. I think the owners AND the general public are going to be expecting a whole lot more.

Matty D. is quickly becoming a top 12 driver, and many here can't wait to banish him to the Xfinity Series.

I say all of this hoping Bubba can find a way to get it going, because I don't want to see him become the next Michael Waltrip. A guy with few actual results, but with a shtick and the ability to attract sponsors and media attention. I would far rather those things come because of his on track performance.

I just feel like if they’re willing to move it next year… they’re that much closer to possibly not even showing door numbers at some point ahead.

I understand NOBODY is saying that thats the direction it will go… but just something tells me that if the sponsors can ask for this placement to be changed… that later they'll ask for no number on the door…

The numbers is the most important thing when you’re following a driver. Hell, there was a day in the south east you’d see the number of someones driver on the rear windows of their cars it seemed like you’d see that stuff every day driving somewhere on a few vehicles… I know that’s been harder to find recently but still… we identify with the number so much

I don't believe anybody ever got very far repeating the mantra "the customer is always wrong". It doesn't matter whether you agree with their assessment of the sport or not. If they no longer follow it, they no longer follow it, and that is a problem, ESPECIALLY when their is scant little evidence they are being replaced in any significant numbers by people that LIKE the changes. When you show me one of these lamebrained ideas that have INCREASED the popularity of the sport, I'll lay off. I think what a LOT of people want is a certain level of consistency, and familiarity.

100%...I hated the idea of stage racing...now I am a huge fan!

There is no evidence of why anybody quit watching the sport except your blowhard claims whenever there is a change. :idunno:

Keep this in mind though, the same people who hate Bubba Wallace love Hailie Deegan.

There are people that are going to defend anything and everything NASCAR does and say the rest of us don't get it.

As you said, if the fans leave, so do the sponsors. These companies won't stick around and sponsor these cars if there's only 100,000 people watching. I guess NASCAR would band-aid that problem by taking the numbers off the cars altogether and adding more sponsor logos.

as long as they don't do what you think they ought to do they will be fine.

Has NASCAR REALLY ever asked the question? Darned if I know, they sure didn't talk to anybody I know. Would they tell us the results if they did? I joined the fan council for awhile. The questions were completely loaded in a way and narrow enough to not actually allow any REAL dissent. I finally quit when I realized it was pointless. On a few occaisions, I offered very specific critiques and comments. Did ANYBODY ever contact me to follow up? HELL NO. IN EVERY single contact I have EVER had with a sanctioning body or a racetrack, even while being a hard card caring member of ARCA, the attitude has ALWAYS been 100% not interested in anybody that has an opinion different than their own. Since 1994, I have been pretty much responsible for over 150 sales of tickets for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. They have basically shown that they have not the SLIGHTEST regard for our wants and desires, so that number has dropped to zero.

Matty D said publicly that he would entertain an Xfinity ride himself.

Matty D would likely become the face of the truck series if he ever was offered/considered a full time ride there. I’m not trying to put him down by saying that. Hell how crappy would that really be to go and win some series championships in a series like that?

sure the cup vs truck money is incredibly different though…

I prefer numbers being pushed forward or even to the rear quarter panel since contingency stickers are gone. I've hated the look without them. So awkward.

Some people sound like chicken little. The sky is not falling. I repeat, the sky is not falling.

The sky fell a LONG time ago. When you have to tear down 75% of your grandstands, you are relegated to third tier cable channels (NBCSN), and you can't sign a one series title sponsor, the sky has done fell.
