How does Chris Buescher have lower odds than someone who won't be in the race?

Poor Chris Buescher

A guy who isn't in the race has a better shot at winning than he does.

I have been thinking about this all day and
my decision pains me but I think its correct.
It probably is just common sense, but
Chase needs to follow, draft, and learn from
Dale Jr. as much as he can till the last lap
when everybody goes all in.

Why does it pain you? That advice would benefit several drivers with more experience than young Elliott.
I think the instinct leans towards
lead as much as possible and whenever you can.

It takes a lot of discipline and patience to follow.
Just this race only though, I think he could learn a lot.

Just early thinking. So much can happen . Who knows,
the Hendricks cars may still be taking automatic left turns
and then any game plan is blown to pieces.

No matter how I feel about the current version of NASCAR , the week of the Daytona 500 is still special. One of my favorite sports events of the year and STILL the biggest day in stock car racing. The season finale st Homestead has NOTHING on the Daytona 500.

This reads good to me.....

Upon Further Review: Tough decisions ahead

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — After months of building cars, nights of analyzing data and hours preparing for all contingencies, Sunday’s Daytona 500 could come down to a simple decision for crew chiefs.

Do you want tires or do you want track position?

In recent years, the question was easy. You took track position because tires didn’t wear as much on a surface last repaved in 2010. Teams often changed no tires or two tires at most during the race. Only if the car was way off or the driver flat-spotted the tires trying to slow as they entered pit road did teams change four tires on a stop.

But just as the breeze brings the cool ocean air, there’s a change with Daytona International Speedway.

The 2.5-mile track is reawakening. It’s growing temperamental. The smooth repaved surface is starting to show its personality and make tires wear.

“The grip is just going away,’’ Daytona 500 pole-sitter Chase Elliott said. “These racetracks that sit down here in Florida that bake in the sun all day long, where it stays warm all year, you know, it just puts a lot of age on the track.’’

The result is the cars are becoming more difficult to drive.

“Game planning for this place, the biggest part, I think, is … figuring out what our package needs to be handling-wise,’’ said Todd Gordon, crew chief for Clash winner Joey Logano. “This place is getting rougher and getting older. So handling comes back into play.’’

Small Crowd for the Clash at Daytona: Sunday's Clash at Daytona was the 39th running of the annual exhibition. For much of its existence, it's been a show unto itself. This time, moved to Sunday's bright sunshine due to Saturday night's rain clouds, it served somewhat as a primer for the Daytona 500, which will also presumably run in warm sunshine. But unlike the 500, the Clash rolled out before the smallest crowd for a big-league Daytona race in memory, an estimated 15,000.

Toyota eggs are in the handling basket, but the Clash showed that tires are crucial. This is going to be fun.

Larson, team not happy with early exit from Clash: #42-Kyle Larson's car was parked with 14 laps remaining in the Clash at Daytona exhibition Sunday when his team had more than six crewmen over the wall to work on the car. NASCAR's new damaged vehicle policy states that the penalty for "too many men over the wall" is the car can't continue in the race. There was confusion all around the Chip Ganassi Racing camp as NASCAR had said the five-minute clock for repairs on pit road wouldn't be used. But the remainder of the policy -- that body panels and pieces can't be replaced, work on damaged cars must be done on pit road, etc. -- was in effect. "I didn't even know that was a rule," Larson said. "I guess it doesn't really matter because it's just an exhibition race anyways. I feel bad for our new sponsor Credit One Bank that they don't get to be part of the last 10 laps. "It's just confusing. We know now."

What an incredible talent that guy was.

He could drive anything.

And he won in a whole bunch of places too.

Dan Gurney
Mario Andretti
AJ Foyt
Mark Donohue

Mario I think is the greatest ever, but a lot of people say otherwise. Foyt is probably second on my personal list...
