2022 Silly Season

I'm glad you don't have an issue with it from your perspective but Penske and the Wood bros clearly felt otherwise since they nearly yanked him from his seat for yesterday's race. Easy to downplay it when it isn't your job to deal with it.
Yeah. I am not sure how petty some sponsors can be, but this is a good opportunity to be so. The 21 car didn't get much on TV time and they probably could make a good case for not paying because of his actions.

The problem in logic I see with those saying "I dont have a problem with what Matt said" is at the core of it besides the hidden meaning of "F*ck Joe Biden" which is what "Lets Go Brandon" means for the uninitiated is that you are taking the risk of turning off a segment of companies that are willing to sponsor you or cant even get in a door to talk with them to get an opportunity. Thats pretty stupid if you look at from the view of trying to find a job, why would you alienate and eliminate half of prospective employers (i.e. potential sponsors), you just narrowed the prospects down further. I dont have a problem with what he said getting into the car. Thats fine say what you want. The problem I have is the "woe is me" routine when you consistently havent won a race to pull that crap he did this weekend and then now I guarantee you when he doesnt get a Cup ride the tweets are going to be of the "I was canceled" variety. No you idiot you canceled yourself by failing to win a race for however many years and then on top of your professional ineptitude you attempted to make the Wood Brothers look bad, Ford look bad and Roger Penske look bad.

I’m not downplaying anything. Guy obviously isn’t smart enough to get a good Xfinity or Truck ride. Lol.
I do think he has the talent for an X ride, but he's turned into a sponsor nightmare. Sometimes to get your dream job, you have to make sacrifices. For racing, publicly expressing your opinions may be one of them.

5 Hour Energy left furniture row and (in part) killed that entire race team by doing so, and they didn't even have an external reason like Matt just provided for his team's sponsors. He was lucky to get that ride in the first place then decided to screw with their money on the way out. Complete punk move. Self centered and entitled.

Suarez lost his food sponsor when he had a photo taken of him eating something else. $hit like that happens

Yep, that's the biggest problem I have with this. Things aren't going the way he wants, and now he has a convenient excuse for playing the victim card.

Look at the narrative with Colin Kaepernick. They say he lost his career because of the kneeling, but most people forget that he didn't start the kneeling until after his play had declined and he was a backup.

I'd like to see some context on the comment. Did he just offer it up for the camera for no particular reason? Or was he interviewed by Kelli Stavast before saying that? Remember, she's the one that started this by puposefully or inadvertantly saying that's what the Talladega crowd said. I could see him mocking her for it.

I hope he's sincere

No, this is an apology because he was about to benched by WBR on Sunday.

If he really wanted to apologize, he would apologize to Brandon Brown and denounce that statement. If anything, this was half-hearted as hell because he knows he ****** up his image entirely.

He's got a long-road to fix his image.

I'm =guessing= the only thing that kept him in the car is no one else was available. X and Truckers had already left, there were no DNQs to take over, local talent wouldn't be approved for Cup, and it was too late to fly anyone in. At that point, Ford may have even accepted a non-Ford driver.

100% speculation on my part.

I would have called Harrison Burton ASAP and would have told Matty D to get on the next plane out of town.

And for all we know, they may have called people and either not reached them, or not been able to get them there in time.

There's an expression in the military about stomping on your 'anatomy', with cleats / track shoes / golf shoes.

It isn't that easy with the different seats and driver preferences and all to just plot somebody else in the car. The Damage was already done, who needed the negative publicity, the Burton gerbil would have run his mouth for at least a half a stage commentary and then the others would have to chime in. eh, too much trouble, just run the race and get the hell out.

I stopped watching at the 1:40 mark. He didn’t look very sad yesterday pulling his $hit. It seems like this dude is going through some stuff off the track, if that’s the case I hope he gets whatever help he needs. Until then he needs someone to take the phone away from him, gather his thoughts and figure out what’s next.

I was just thinking this might have been more sincere if he'd released his statements in print, or at least put on a shirt with a collar and rehearsed it a few times. Again, we're back to him needing an agent or PR flack but he'd had one of those, this whole kerfuffle might not have ever occurred.

Understandable.

The thing is when the sanctioning body is clearly denouncing and distancing themselves away from the "FJB/LGB" statements. Now why would he bring it back up? He's clearly tone-deaf and inconsiderate of this negatively effecting Brandon Brown's career.

It's horrible timing and something he should saved for the off-season, he obviously didn't watch Phelps' "State of the Sport" broadcast on Friday. Phelps already stated he wanted nothing to do with it.

Something is just off about that fella. It could be he’s getting bad advice from somewhere, he’s going through marital problems, or financial problems . Frankly it’s none of my business and I feel icky speculating about it but seriously as a professional race car driver, he’s played it all wrong since Cindric was announced for the 2. This downward spiral could be shown to a class of aspiring drivers on what not to do to make it in big time auto racing.

I'm glad he atleast acknowledged he messed up and felt guilty about it. Doesn't seem like he fully understands what he did though. Something just isn't clicking for him. Everything seems to circle back to being self preserving. I hope he grows and learns from this but again I don't think he's all the way there.

It was a lot of "I feel sorry for myself" but not a lot of "I feel empathy for the people I inconvenienced".

“When you’re dependent on sponsors, you don’t upset their customers. That upsets the sponsors, and then you have trouble getting other sponsored jobs. That’s a condition of top-tier racing.”
Thing is before he was in the 21 he was in pure sponsor hunting mode and showcased a persona that was extremely fan friendly and inoffensive, using social media as a tool to do so.. and now just last week he has 1. Rambled on social media about how divisive "we" are as people, and 2. Said one of the most divisive messages he possibly could.

This guy short circuits my brain I just don't understand his motives :owquitit:

Same goes for him job hunting without an agent, and maybe not understanding he was going to be a free agent despite being clearly told so, and fighting so hard to get a good ride then seemingly not even trying to get one after that. What is his end goal with all of this?

I think the dude could use a intermission from racing. Maybe he needs to just sit down and chill for a bit and get his thoughts together or something…

anyone else, agree?

So his whole apology is "I said something that I deeply believe in. Then God laid guilt on me." WTF??????
Did he really think he was going to be driving the My Pillow/Newsmax car next year by entertaining this group this weekend?
I know he was so back and forth on this one. Honestly I think he would of been better just owning it. "I'm sorry I offended so many people, but I feel very strong about this". Like what he said or not I'd have more respect for him for being consistent.

Lets not forget Carl Edwards had the don't tread on me flag next to his name on the car. He didn't push those feelings on anyone else and no one seemed offended.

I'd argue that said flag really didn't mean then what it has come to represent now, but true. Hell, Chase survived endorsing a Trump rally so...

Cyber Ninjas was talking about a deal for next year's Phoenix races.

:sarcasm:

I personally think nothing Dibenedetto said was wrong. Sorry Penske and their sponsors have a stick up their ass

He speaks as if it's wrong for him to have feelings. That's not a good philosophy to live by. Anger is normal. Frustration is normal. You're allowed to feel angry. You're allowed to express those feelings. But there's a healthy way to do it.

He's incredibly self destructive, and honestly, he could use some counseling

All that video tells me is that he has a terrible relationship with himself.
