Big changes coming

Jeff Burton called this format "absurd" and ridiculed it on ESPN in 2007 when they proposed it. I'm guessing he'll have come around by the time he comments on NBC.

"Second largest sport", lol. Those were the days.

The second largest sport comment is one that will go down in infamy. I understand that you can't have broadcasters complaining about Nascar all race long but it is quite irritating to have them doing nothing other than operating as Nascar shills.

I had an entire row to myself at Bristol a couple years ago. The weather was crappy that day, but we're talking about the same Bristol that used to have waiting lists for tickets.

When I first started attending Bristol it sat around 37K I believe. It seems like attendance at many Nascar races in the future will settle in about the 40-50K mark which is awful compared to years ago but overall more than adequate.

Remember when NASCAR changed to the stupid 43-1 points scale, which was even worse than the 'traditional' system, and said it was because the old way was too complicated and they needed to simplify so everyone could understand?

You think these same casual fans won't be confused by why the driver who finished 9th left the race with more points than the driver who finished 6th because he was in a higher position earlier in the race?

But it's NASCAR fans who we are told are indecisive and don't know what "they" (a group of millions who are all supposed to think alike and speak with one voice) want. Yeah.

When Coke changed formula's without asking its customers if they wanted change I loved the unintended consequences of the decision as it is arrogant to tell your customers what they want. Fortunately Coke didn't pull a Nascar and make poor choice upon poor choice and fixed the problem.

Another example of my shameful hatred involves McDonalds. From what I understand Big Mac's are around 5 bucks which is stupid money but one of my friend's starving student son has a work around full of unintended consequences. He orders a Double Cheese burger with shredded lettuce and Mac sauce for $1.50 and he likes hot fries so he orders "no salt" fries which means a new batch of fries have to be made so they are piping hot and then he salts them. The unintended consequences are deliciously funny.
Hamburgers versus our love and passion for racing... not the same thing. Racing fans cringe at the prospect of the unintended consequences, while you "lick your lips." What does that say about your love for the sport of auto racing? IMO, it says it all.

In my view, there's no coming back from this. This is a 'jumping the shark' moment. I don't love NASCAR's imminent failure, but I do take a bit of guilty pleasure in being able to say 'I told you so' as attendance and ratings go into a tailspin. There are many fans like me who've tolerated all of Brian's crap who will not tolerate this.

Yeah, NASCAR isnt gaining any new fans with this BS. Go ahead, explain this to your friends who dont watch NASCAR. I dare you.

Making up new rules constantly is annoying most loyal fans.

I understand change, but the chase and the new system really brought this looming cloud over NASCAR's head. The points system is not really simplified, it just screws up the drivers in terms of a DNF, but hey its "working". I really think France and company are throwing random darts at a board to see what sticks. So far, nothing is really "sticking" per say, more like bouncing back in the face of everyone else. This might be disastrous IMHO.

Btw, I'm obligated to keep my Twitter just about work, but people should tweet their displeasure at Brian France and NASCAR. It's really the best way to be influential today..

Two completely lackluster, but genuine, NFL conference championship games were played today in which one team was simply much better than the other. There will be no format changes next year or five years from now to ensure that every game is close and that standings remain close. In their infinite delusion, prominent figures in NASCAR continue to tell us that football is always exciting and dramatic throughout. This is what racing lacks and why football is so successful. The sport of stock car racing continues to have the life choked out of it by their incompetent hands.

Let's make sure we keep Brian away from the NFL.

Awesome post. BF may not believe it, but every race does the have to have 50 lead changes and a photo finish. It's the fact that those things are rare that make them special.

It's interesting that this is the only place I've seen that the majority of people don't like the potential changes.

Comments by Dale Jr. and Keselowski would indicate that the drivers' council has had significant input and that this has been a working concept for quite some time, which would eliminate Monster as a major influence. Sure, they have probably had some input since they came on board, but this hardly originates with them. NBC and Fox, yes, they are likely heavily involved.

The drivers' council members were also happy to put a positive spin on the work they did on the All-Star format last year. Then when it went terribly wrong, many disassociated and blamed Brad.

I think Monster has a lot less influence than we think.

So, they're not even changing the points scale itself but instead stopping the race and awarding bonus points at a couple of different intervals. Yawn.

I guess the Talladega Chase race won't be such a horrible bore anymore? That's all I've got.

It's funny how other forms of racing that don't give free laps back like they're running a charity and bunch up the field with phony cautions don't have this perceived supposed problem of drivers not racing hard enough throughout the race. I wonder why.
No ****. If they didn't throw a caution every time a car got in the ****** marbles maybe there'd be a bit of a sense of urgency throughout the race.

Yes, maybe this is what the "24 twins races" in the graphic was about.
I really would have preferred having some weekends where you have a twin format with a couple of shorter races (2x250 miles, 2x200 miles or something) and each race is scored as an individual event. This is some goofy **** right here.

100% agree. The racing has more to do with the cars than anything else. Make the cars harder to drive, the racing will get better. It's been proven time and time again.
I'm sure this will take a lot of the spotlight off of the fact that they have reduced aero downforce even more this year. If the racing actually does get better they'll most likely attribute it all to the format change.

Complete failure is the ONLY CURE for these ridiculous ideas. Nascar will be forced to rid itself of the joke called BRIAN. With it goes those that encourage these stupid ideas. I HOPE.

The CART Series went into complete failure, and open wheel has NEVER been the same. Be very careful for what you hope for. I used to sit with a really great guy named Barry at Portland International during the CART years, and he said one year, "This is all going to be gone, and never come back." I thought, "No way in hell!" Then it was, and he was right.

I have to be honest. I am not looking forward to tomorrow. I'll be okay no matter what, but I don't know about this sport that I love. I am very concerned.

Can someone please direct me to the correct Big Changes Coming Thread? o_O Getting to be like the old Danica Days. I sense an 'All Things Changes Thread' in our future. :D

Wow, so we knew we were in for some big ones but damn! Well, it is what it is I guess..... A former shell of the sport from when it was in its glory years. They are going to keep on changing this thing until, one day, they realize what most all of us have known for the past 13 or so years..... They had it right and they effed it up.

I hope I'm completely wrong and this is the change to end all changes. A change that will bring this sport back to where it was in the pre-Chase Era. I'm not going to hold my breath though. I'll be gone soon enough.

One question about this that I have is - Since when do drivers bide their time in getting to the front at anything other than a plate track? This new system is supposed to encourage guys to make moves early in races, but seriously, outside of 4 races a year when is this ever an issue?

We hear every week from these guys how key track position is.

They seriously must think we're stupid.

NFL games last 3 hours. College games last 3.5. Both of these sports are doing fine. Length is not the problem.
US football is actually the perfect sport for the attention-challenged. The games may last 3+ hours, but there's plenty of breaks in the action between plays. I recall seeing a statistic that there's less than 30 minutes of actual game play during a game. The rest is just time between downs while the play clock ticks. Heck, there's time between plays to check other games. That's perfect for those who can't focus on one thing at a time.

It allows the millennials time to check their phones for Facebook/Twitter/SnapChat/etc updates and to check the stats for the fantasy teams.

I haven't used RaceView and I hear it enhances the experience at the track but it reminds me of my friend's then 10 year old son who spent 80% of a race at Dover watching it on the device and I kept nudging him explaining that the race is right in front of us!

The scanner option alone is a huge enhancement when watching the race. That product has far more pluses than minuses IMO.

I love auto racing I just don't care for the watered down slop that is foisted upon us today. You may be a fan of the fastest car not always getting the pole, phantom cautions, a lottery championship and boring aero filled races but you are in the minority. Some fans have minimum expectations while others are happy with what is provided them.
