Fall/Winter Weather Thread

About 20 minutes ago, Big Dog decided it was time to get outside to pee, get some b'fast, and make the rounds. Both have now holed up in their houses.

Heard from majestyx --- fortunately she didn't have to go in to work and she still has power. No word from anyone else, yet.
We got some down trees and power went off overnight but was on when I got up.Thank God for thanksgiving leftovers.

Yeah been going out and warming up the Honda and backing down the driveway about 3/4 car lengths to help melt the ice.If I leave I will not make it back up the driveway right now.
I went for a drive today, and that was the problem I was going to have. I could drive the ice fine on the flat roads, but hills and the tilted driveway not so much. I made it on the hills just by repositioning where i was in the lane, but I wound up backing into my spot on the driveway. Since there wasn't any ice there, all i had to do was get a running start to get to the dry pavement. And I managed to not hit the house.

Dad just got home. Said roads are worse tonight than they wee this morning. Says this morning it was soft slush, now it is hard pack slippery ice with lots of ruts. No signs of sand, sand trucks, or snow plows between home and Harris Fort Worth, roads are like they have not been touched. Has to work again tomorrow and sunday, not looking forward to the commute

One of my friend's mom works at Cook Children's, and they are letting staff sleep at the hospital instead of going home.

There's over an inch of ice on the ground and about inch or so on the roof. Weather Channel is saying the low will be around 14 tonight.

Not that anyone cares, but I'm okay and with power (at least for now).

Yep. FW and points N/W were slammed. We didn't get quite THAT much here, but still a good bit. Walked the dog on the greenbelt, and I was ankle deep in the crushed grass.

Also, I love having battery backups. We were having brutal power flashes last night.

Disclaimer: Somebody had to know i was going to come with photos.

I didn't think about the driveway till I seen my neighbor trying to get up his.He finally decided to park in the street.

I don't think Bowzer likes the ice.
We missed all of that down here --- we were on the very southern edge of the hard stuff.
He refused to come outside. We had to finally convince him to come out so he could empty his bladder...he's invigorated by the cold, but one step on the ice/snow and he jumped back. I got him on the ice, but when i tried to make him go on the grass, he was hearing none of it. Our neighbor said both of her dogs were doing the same thing.."This is not grass...what am I stepping on...i don't like this feeling".

We probably spent an hour out there trying to make him go to the bathroom and playing with him. Finally resorted to a walk down along the creek so he could smell things. That always works.

I love the pictures. Your dog is so cute, playing with you. My dog gets down like that when she wants to play too.

We were supposed to get 3 to 5 inches of snow today total. I'm not sure what we wound up with but the roads sure was slick earlier this afternoon. I was just glad to get home and get snuggled down in my house.

Hope everyone down south is safe. No snow yet in the land of the cheese. It is, however, 10 with a north west wind here. It's going to get very cold here tonight----below zero. I'm in the house till spring.:(

Not sure what happens to a person, but we're at 25F and it feels colder than the times when I lived in MN when the highs didn't get above 0F. It must be a tolerance thing.

No more dog farts huh? :D
Nope. They don't ever stay in the house too long at a time anyway. Neither are house dogs.
This morning they were in just long enough for me to give them their meds and out they went. Only 29 outside with very
light wind --- so it's not too bad. I went out with them and checked the water and food--- gotta love those heated water bowls.

-11 here but that is easier to take than dealing with an ice storm. Putting another log on the fire.

I'm staying buttoned up --- decided some music would help. So, a little surfing music from The Ventures. Mike Oldfield and "Tubular Bells". Working another Ventures CD, then Iron Butterfly comes up. May pull out all my Tangerine Dream CDs.

Makes a cloudy, cold day go a little better. If "Tequila" or Duane Eddy's "Rebel Rouser" doesn't get you moving, better check your pulse.

I haven't heard Tubular Bells in... decades. I don't recall if that song was one side of the album or the entire album.

everything on the roads re-froze. It's a skating rink.

Mum was amused as I slid from our garage door to the mailbox across the street, then struggled to get back to our house, then fell trying to get to my truck....which took a good 20 minutes to get from a coolant temp of 24 to 180.

OK, I'll quit bitchin about our cold weather down here now.

Dick Dale is always good for some surf tunes, too.

our main roads have 2 tracks you can get in.Seen a little sand on Great Southwest but that was it.I had fun slip sliddin my way across the parking lot at the gym today

finally got some of the ice cleared out from around and on dad's truck. at least 1" thick on the hood and tonneau and same on the ground. the bed of my truck is at least 1.5" deep.

I haven't seen anything official, but the weather pages are all stating that fort worth PD is closing all highways in their jurisdiction for cleaning.

Dad's yet to see a sand truck, or even sand on the road. The news has shown road graders acting as snow plows, but that doesn't work so well on ice. I would think the studded ground compactors would be better than that, at least they would have the ability to maybe crack the ice.

Glad to see they are "beginning" to start removing the ice only 2 days after this storm hit.I haven't seen any trucks on the roads either. Not even on any news stories only 1 road grader.Used to be the news stations would show the trucks out working but not this year.

It seems like cities in the South have no idea how to clean up ice and snow off the roads. Here in NWA, the cities didn't even treat the roads before the storm and now that it's passed, you'll still be lucky to see a truck out attempting to remove the snow and ice. I went to walmart today, nearly 30 hours after the storm and the roads were still in terrible shape with not a single truck out treating the roads. On my trip to walmart, I did stop at Crystal Bridges (an art museum) to take a few pictures. I would have liked to take a short drive into The Ozarks, but the roads were too bad for that.
