Hamlin fined for comments

Wouldn't it be kinda neat if ten or fifteen other drivers grew some balls and got behind Denny?

I think it would be cool if other drivers, looking to back Hamlin, took up a line from an old Kirk Douglas movie

in the movie, when the Romans went in front of a huge crowd and asked that their leader, Spartacus, make himself known so that he could be arrested, the entire crowd bellowed:

WE ARE SPARTACUS !!!

in that spirit, any time that any driver gets in front of a microphone they should repeat, word for word, what Hamlin said that got him fined

all for one and one for all

wait, that's a different movie . . .

So I guess according to Nascar, the drivers should say nothing bad about the Gen6 car, and we'll all believe that its just the drivers don't want to make passes? Most racing fans will eventually figure that one out. I never cared much about Denny before this, but I have a little more respect for him now. I hope he continues to stick up for himself.

about all Hamlin has any experience with is the car of tomorrow, I don't think he did much racing in the Gen 4 as they are calling it these days, so that was all he has to compare it too, unlike some of the older drivers. I bet he has had plenty of calls from law firms.:)

I don't see how he could lose this one. Saying something like 'It's like when we started out with the gen 5. It takes time to figure it out' isn't slamming anything. nascar sure is touchy about the CoT legacy when they should be proud. It sure saved a few lives, and that's what the last 2 gens are about.
I am still not clear on the statement that caused the fine. I've listened to everything that I could find and can't find anything that seems to be all that bad. At least nothing that would warrant the fine. The is an overwhelming number of fans are speaking out about this via NASCAR Radio, Twitter and other social media. Whether anyone here wants to admit to it or not, public opinion certainly plays a role in NASCAR's direction. That is why I think that NASCAR will bite the bullet on this one and the fine will be rescinded.

Don't think the fine will be rescinded but it will be reduced.

Wonder what Sr would do.....

nascar is overly sensitive here. I think part of it is Denny's history of whining, and him taking his 'performance' out of the equation. I can imagine the nascar bigs watching him start last and finish 3rd and expecting Denny to gush about the new car. Problem is, those bigs didn't understand what was really happening on the track. So when Denny said "it's like the gen 5 early one", they took it the wrong way. I also think his REAL criticism about the tires played a large role in the fine, but nascar isn't going to come out and say they are protecting a huge cash cow of theirs.

Yes, I'm a cynic of nascar INC....otherwise known as the France brats.

Not blaming Busch at all but I think NASCAR is having flashback's to his assessment after wining the first COT race @ Bristol. They don't want history repeating itself.

That could be part of it too. I hear they did some studies on how driver comments affect the fans, so ANY mention of the 2 generations in the same interview may be a no-no. But their over reaction says more about the Frances frame of mind than anything else. to call DH's comments slamming is hypocritical after nascar defended the CoT for years. Isn't comparing the new car to the old 'good' car a positive? It really shows what Brian thinks of the fans. We're a bunch of idiots he can program to believe the racing was good.

Makes me turn off the race faster after it's over because now the drivers will be spouting off more scripted bullchit than ever before.

True. We just started getting some honest comments from drivers, and now guys will clam up because some vague referance will get you slammed. Burton spoke out and said nascar over reacted. Good for him. Lets see who else has some balls this weekend.

The best thing for the drivers to do now is rattle off their sponsors, refer all other questions to the Nascar head office and leave it at that.

I hope they don't puss out like that. A real man would repeat Denny's comment while explaining what it actually meant. It IS just like the gen 5, or ANY other new car, because we have to learn it before we can race it.

Bruton? Keep in mind where they are racing this weekend. Bruton always has something to say the week that they are at one of his tracks and more often than not he's talking out his.... well, you know where I'm going with this.

Anyhow, there have been plenty speaking out already on this. Jeff Burton is a driver example. The hosts on Sirius/XM NASCAR Radio's TMD show are yet another. They are always accused of being NASCAR shills, right Andy?

I'm going to add on caviat to this whole thing. If nascar called Denny in to explain his comments, and DH whined and slammed the car, then that's what he meant in the interview and he gets fined.

I have my doubts that's how it went down, especially after Brads meeting and his careful wording of how it went. It was also interesting to hear that there were 2 seperate meetings, on with Lesa and one with Brian, to discuss Brads comments that the 2 don't work together. Veeeery interesting indeed.

If KyBu wins the NNS on Saturday, I imagine we'll find out ;)

Huh? Jeff Burton. Are you at the campsite and drinking already? ;)

Fans may want to tune into today's Live PressPass on nascar.com for driver reactions. Every single one of them will be asked to comment on this situation. That should be a good gauge as to how all of this will affect what they say/do. I think that it starts @ 11:30 today.

I looked all over the nascar com site trying to find "press pass" or live press pass . Does it just appear out of nowhere at the appointed time or what?

The link should be there once it is about to start. It will also be posted via twitter beforehand. I'll post it when I see it.

looks like they have censored the press at "their" track. not even asked how they like the new car

The comments weren't a big deal to me and I don't think he was trying to stand up to NASCAR. Hamlin has always been kind of a whiner/glass is half empty person when it comes to post-race interviews. I think NASCAR was particularly irked this time because they gave him a spot on the racetrack late in the race and what do they get in return—negative comments.

Gave him a spot?

Does any of this really matter? When I am watching a race I don't think about anything other than the race itself and where my driver and the drivers on my fantasy teams are running. Obvsiously it gives something about which the journalist can write and provides ample message board fodder but does it really matter in the big picture? What true fan would stop watching over something like this? I certainly don't think anyone will quit driving in NASCAR because of this.

FTR, I logged on to my NASCAR Fan Council account and sent NASCAR a message regarding my opionion that Denny's fine was unwarranted and that while I understand the need for drivers to not be allowed to disparage the sport I don't think that Denny was doing anything other than making a factual comment that anyone who watched the race would agree with.

I don't think my comment will make any difference but at least it's out there.

It should matter they should be great op's for drivers to plug their sponsors while discussing the most interesting events of the race. Damaging the credibility of the moment and having fans (aka buyers) tuning out is detrimental to the long term health of racing.

I dont care if they drop it on appeal, the intent and the desire to conform every driver into rimmers couldn't be more obvious. The message has been sent you had better make verbal love to the Gen6, even if Hamlin wins an appeal.

That being said pre and post race interveiws are rendered as almost worthless. There is nothing to be learned and even technical conversartions are compromised, because God forbid that anyone dare question the duvine Gen6.

So for the pre-race the only worthwhile moment is the strut and look of a righteous babe doing the national anthem, or the wives standing in attention. For the post race, it is more challenging and dependent on how the winners wife looks.
But Nascar doesnt help on the visuals either, by putting Miss Sprint Cup in a mannish firesuit. Their hardcore into the censorship, and obvious control freaks peddling pretend Cowboys that are programed to act like puppets.

I still prefer Nascar and cup racing over all, but it all begins and stops with the green and checkers, thanks to the censuring dumbasses in control.
And there is no need to get mad at the broadcasters, there programmed yes men as well, just doing what they have to do.

a spot..hmm as long as we have our tin foil hats on, nascar is mad at him because he knocked up his girlfriend and didn't marry her...section 12-14 blah blah blah
