NASCAR considering radical changes to playoff system

Just because it doesn't make sense to you guys doesn't mean its not true... for instance.. I don't understand Einstein's theory of relativity or how to make millions on wall street. :) I have always been good at math though.

Admit I don't know much about the place but the name does nothing to create a feeling of excitement.

Similar to Sleepy Hollow, Green Acres or Whispering Pines. :D
They like to say on TV and during press conferences and whatnot that it's in Miami...it's nowhere near Miami. It's literally in a big field with a little residential area nearby.

Maybe they'll move it to Phoenix or Fontana so it's closer to the banquet.

No, but they do turn the power off in the middle of the game. :)

That's New Orleans for you.

I never said his plan would work...... I merely said I believe that was his train of thought in making this decision.

This. It is far more likely that it wont generate more fans, but mathematically it works. When I first read it I didnt see it, but clearly there is an abundance more non fans then there are Nascar fans. It was clearly obvious for me at that point. Then I actually looked at the numbers and you were almost dead on, which made me laugh to myself because I knew you were just putting together a hypothetical situation.

I think when you look at the situation as a whole, we are seeing the changes due to the fact that there is a new TV deal happening. NBC loves the drama, hence why they returned to the NFL in the capacity of Sunday Night Football. Primetime slot and the ability to flex the schedule to make sure they get key matchups late in the season.

NBC surely had some pull in this. Being able to put races on TV that mean something to 16 race teams as opposed to 12 or 13 and then have it get narrowed down in those final 10 races provides a lot of potential drama. It even has that effect on the regular season races as was mentioned earlier about taking shots to get that win.

It also makes every race in the chase matter and allows for a bad race in the chase.

My only dislike now is that all the work comes down to the 1 race with 4 competitors. I would reverse it. Have the first race in the challenger round cut the first 4 teams. Then the final four would have 3 races to battle it out. If it were done that way all the griping abut resetting points would be less. I dont see why the teams that are 13th through 16th should have more of an opportunity compared to the final four. Realistically the 13th-16th place cars have three shots to advance while the final four have 1 race to perform. Seems slightly backwards to me.

It would be like giving the wild card in football home field advantage over a division winner

I reckon I got to upset and my faith faltered.

Verily verily I say unto thee, thou hast no reason to feareth what will becometh of the races.

If it dont workout just right Brian will see the little peoples anguish and despair, and be moved with compassion.

Then Brian will hold press conferences, and will make it alright with just his words. You might miss the Homestead race, but whatever you do dont be a fool and miss the follow up press conference.

If changes and excitement are really what Brian France is after, how about a lottery draw for crew chiefs/teams for the final 10 races. Drivers draw their teams for the final 10 races. Teams change every race for the final 10 races. Then we'll really see who the best driver is. :growl:
My guess is Kurt Busch would kick everyone's ass. :D

It ain't hawg dawg that's to blame. He's just calling it like it is. **** Brian France. Can't we impeach this a**hole?

No, someone just needs to kidnap him.

No money involved as part of the ransom, just the abolition of the entire Chase format.

Thats a great idea, and there is no way you could get in trouble for that. It would be a service for the good of mankind and race fans :D

God how I wish people wold stop trying to make this a stick and ball sport. It never was, and it just can't be.

Yes, but NASCAR races are competing against the start of football, basketball, hockey and the World Series. Which is what Brian France is worried about.

Even if this plan works to perfection and NASCAR increases it's ratings along with atracting a more desireable demographic I get the feeling that most here would still deem it a failure because they don't like.

Not me. it's gimmicky but if the gimmick gains more viewers, I would give Nascar props. That doesn't mean I will suddenly have an about face and say I love the format, I don't but the whole reason they're doing this is to make more money. No other reason.

There is no way Nascar can ever be on the same level as the NFL or the World Series, just not going to happen. Accept that or change the end of the season to the end of August, and start it in January, of course there is the Superbowl, but suppose he could schedule that an off weekend. What pisses me off the most is the greed here, Nascar just got a new tv contract, they make billions of dollars, yet the are worried when instead of 120,000 in the stands they have 80-90,000. They are turning a nice profit, accept the fact that the NFL will always be number one and please do something to keep those old time fans interested in the sport. Brian make the racing better, do something about the engine package at plate tracks, and put a few more short tracks on the schedule....and they will come.

I'll be watching the first race of the year and the last. As far as the rest, who knows. I don't see the need to follow the sport as closely as I have in the past. I can tell you I will be watching and following more F1 and Indy car races than I have in years past. Nascar has finally become the WWE of the sports world. Mr. France, how can you improve something you know absolutely nothing about? This is the worst decision he has ever made.

I can't believe this is what is gonna determine a Sprint Cup Champion. I would gladly take the original version of the Chase which I hated too, but this to me is just gimmick racing. I would've been okay with some elimination because we all know half way through the Chase its not a 10-12 car battle anyway but to determine a Champion on the performance of one race??? Why is there 36??? I don't think I can respect the winner of this format as a true Sprint Cup Champion.

I'm still having a problem respecting the last 10.

Not calling this the best system but when homestead rolls around & we are flipping out about how nail biting the white knuckle racing is in the final race, I will come back to this thread & laugh.

The magic number for this format is "35". Because the first 35 races don't matter, and apparently none of the fans over the age of 35 matter either. Gotta get those new fans.

I'm laughing right now at the thought of how uninterested I will be at who wins the championship because the points that they start Homestead with are altered for dramatic affect.

I think points are nonexistent when they start Homestead. Finishing position is all that matters.

Absolutely, and the majority of those new fans will move on in a year or two. And where they gonna be from February to September?

The regular season hasn't been very important since the chase began. Now the chase isn't very important either.

I'm just going all in and not giving a sheet about the championship and see if the racing during the season is better.
