NASCAR considering radical changes to playoff system

All jokes aside, if this makes these 'gentlemen' race harder, I'm all for it. Legitimacy doesn't mean much these days. Entertainment is everything.

It doe cancel out the crash so the teammate can get in.. So props for that. I'm not against change but this idea reeks of Nascar trying to manufacture something they're not without improving the actual racing.

I will watch this sport til I die.. I don't give a **** about the champion really, just give me better racing.

Well that's it, they finally 100% lost me, I won't be watching anymore Nascar until this gets fixed.

Under this new system the championship does not mean as much as before.

I never thought I'd see the day that I didnt call myself a Nascar fan, but as of today, I'm not one.

ESPN statement on new Chase format ->

Julie Sobieski, ESPN vice president, league sports programming

“We’re extremely pleased that NASCAR has chosen to implement this format. We have long felt that there was a greater opportunity within the Chase and are in favor of an elimination format, which has been most effective in American sports. We look forward to bringing the Chase to NASCAR fans this fall.”

But Petree says ESPN was pushing for it since they came back. It's part of the story. RT @TheOrangeCone: @MattWeaverSBN ESPN is leaving."

ESPN leaving after 2015.

OK Andy, let 'er rip!

That's the attitude I'm taking. Phuck the championship.

I like the win and move on in the chase thing... and the no bonus points at homestead.... one thing that someone asked that will most definitely come into play is if a team cheats and wins.. do they make the chase?

Cue all the posts from the racing purists on Facebook and Twitter about going to short tracks instead because there's no gimmicks or manufactured drama. While I agree that fans should support their short tracks - no gimmicks or manufactured drama? Oh please. Inversions, half-time breaks, mandatory cautions, etc... let's not forget that the original Chase was imported in full from USAR Pro Cup.

Says the number one short track shrill....ever.

One VERY ironic statement sticks out. Brian said contact is part of the sport, but they did little to stop Edwards going nuts over contact in 2010. That killed 'have at it' before it got started.

Well I'm open to the idea and I'm interested to see how it turns out.

Obviously a small sample, but working here around DC, NASCAR is not on peoples mind most of the time when it comes to sports, but there has be substantial buzz about at work and a few people here are excited to check it out.

We all know this place will be going crazy on that last race.....now about the other 35...

Facts are facts. People eat this stuff up at short tracks and say NASCAR needs to be more like local short tracks. But when NASCAR does do something like this, the purists bitch and moan about how NASCAR sucks and is trying to manufacture drama and they need to be more like the short tracks.

FWIW, younger fans I follow on Facebook and Twitter, they almost universally support this points system. That's all that matters.

Dale Jr. would've won the championship if this format was in place last year. Without winning a race. But this system goes "all in" on winning and eradicates need for consistency. :sarcasm:

SHR seems to be onboard...

Q: The only driver 2 win Winston Cup title (season-long), NEXTEL Cup title (10-driver Chase) & Sprint Cup title (12-driver Chase) is?

A: As many, if not all, of you correctly Tweeted, it was #TonyStewart. Now a 16-driver Chase beckons in 2014. #SmokeWillRise

I look forward to the chase this year, but I'm expecting the regular season to be a bore after the top competitors win and start experimenting for the final 10.

Hmmmm none of the short tracks I go to around here in the north east do this crap, all championships are based on consistency throughout the year as it should be!

I've never seen anyone here say nascar should race like they do at local short tracks.

Fan council again?
