NASCAR considering radical changes to playoff system

i predict homestead will have biggest "build-up" ......an most exciting race of yr !
maybe best chase ever .
4 teams.....best finish wins all !

think about it........each a' tha 4 ....gotta beat other 3 teams ---1 race !
gonna be good !
 
If changes and excitement are really what Brian France is after, how about a lottery draw for crew chiefs/teams for the final 10 races. Drivers draw their teams for the final 10 races. Teams change every race for the final 10 races. Then we'll really see who the best driver is. :growl:
 
So what that "jeffie" said he likes the new format.
If I were in his shoes where I was raking in tens of millions of dollars every year due to nascar, and just a few years away from retiring perhaps I'd sing nascar's tune too.

But I'm just a fan that doesn't have a massive financial stake in nascar, so it's easier for me to see/say that this new format has killed the credibility of the sport, and turned the championship into a cheap reality TV show.

Exactly. Even with the many different point systems throughout the history of nascar, the championship had always gone to the team that accumulated the most points over the entire season. That is until Brian and his trick chase point system was invented.

There were no resetting of the points being crammed down the throats of the fans and drivers, and expecting us to pretend that they were the real points.

I have a pretty good imagination, but not good enough to pretend the reset points are real.

So since football uses a playoff bracket system is there sport a cheap reality tv show? There's plenty of cases where the team with the not-best record has won the Super Bowl. That's basically the same situation we are facing in nascar.

IMO it's different.
In football, one team plays another team every week. At the end of the regular season the best teams are matched up against each other in the play offs to make sure they have a chance to play against each other to determine the very best team... the champion

In racing, one team plays/races EVERY team each week, so there is no need to even have a play off. The best teams are matched up against the other best teams every single time they play/race, so is there really a need for a play off in racing?

The NFL needs playoffs though. The Patriots don't go out and play the 31 other teams an equal number of times. Ideally you'd play 15 games against all intraconference teams and then the two conference champions play in the Super Bowl, but that will never happen due to regional rivalries, TV money, and so on.

What's really frustrating is that my two favorite sports, NASCAR and college football, have their championship systems completely backwards. If there is ANY sport that needs a playoff it's college football. 126 FBS teams, some programs have never met or met only a couple of times over their 100+ year histories, and they're just now crawling out of the stone age and realizing it may be a good idea to have a playoff. Meanwhile, you have NASCAR's Chase when a playoff is completely unnecessary.

Also, resetting the points in the final races would be like resetting the score after the third quarter in the Super Bowl to make sure it was a close game.

Would any football fans think that was ok and that no one should complain about it?

no diff in this new nascar format.

Why should they?

NCAA football: 126 teams, 12 games, 8 or 9 of those are against almost annual regional opponents from your conference. Teams schedule at most, one or two meaningful nonconference games so it's incredibly difficult to get a grasp on who is and is not better than who across conferences. Oklahoma and Florida had been playing football since 1890 and 1906 before they finally met in '08...and they're easily two of the top 10 programs over the last half century. It's actually a shame there isn't an expanded playoff in college football.

NASCAR: Everyone faces everyone 36 times a year. The venue is a factor - road course, short track, flat track, asphalt, concrete. Inane to not crown a champion based on the summation of all of that.

Oh, what a load of horse sh#t!, finally watching Race Hub and listing to Mike Helton talk, and there is a key word that he said twice, Stakeholders, a bunch idiots that dont care about racing, just about how big their bank accounts are, or I could just be talking out my rear end.

Then other thing he said, that "they" talked to the fans and explained to them(brainwashed) into liking the new format, what a even bigger load of horse crap!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
I like it, plus having an elimination after Dover may put some monster back in the Monster Mile.

Once we are 20 races in and the big dogs have their wins and are in, I can see some good points finishes..
 
I bet we are still going to see points racing after the top drivers get their win(s), its going to happen, I mean what is the point of being in the top 5 or top 10 when all you gotta do is be in the top 16 to make it in, then that is when the points racing will go by the wayside, and we will them race, I see nothing changing in the first 25, Richmond still might be a variable for that 16th spot lol

I should say for the most part, I am ok with the change , its the one race winner takes all that I think is total crap, it should be winner takes best of out the last three , or four, atleast then that gives meaning to first 26, I mean what they have done is said the frist 26 races are just meaningless, and really, why even have a points system if its not going to have anything to do with deciding who is the championship, at this point, just get rid of the points, and base everything off of wins, as that is what it sounds like King Faux is trying to do.

Drivers that win gets in, and who has the most wins after the checkered flag flies at Homestead is the Champ.

Hmmm ....I don't know about excitement, I see it producing a lot of controversey for one, angered drivers number two, and a lot of pissed off fans. I've read a lot of comments on other sites and not one of them was good, where are all these fans that are in favor of this? And do you actually think for a minute that any of the drivers like this new format? Highly doubt it, the ones that say they are in favor are just kissing Nascars' ass. I can see it now Jeffy needs a win to advance into the next round and JJ or Jr is the guy he has to move over to get it.....how well is that going to go over at the shop the next day. Or even better Smoke is leading and Kurt needs a win to advance and wrecks him....oh man fireworks. All this is going to do is generate animosity amongest the teams, it is poorly thought out, it has many flaws and it is a complete joke. Just when I thought Nascar might be turning the corner with the cars and better racing they go and do something lame ass like this. It is is an utter embarassment to the sport, if Dale were alive right now he would be in a rage
