SILLY SEASON 2018

Kevin Conway, Andy Lally, Stephen Leicht, and Brett Moffitt have all won Cup ROTY in this decade. None of them had a ride the next season.

I'll defend Andy Lally all day long. Andy is a fabulous road racer, and I actually thought he did a pretty good job considering he was kind of thrown to the wolves. Should he have been in a Cup car? No, not really, BUT I thought he did better than could be expected. If he had been driving with a top tier team, he might still be around. I don't think he would have been any worse long term than Marcos Ambrose.

I'll even come to the table to defend Stephen Leicht. He was doing well in the Xfinity series until a failing Robert Yates Racing brought his career to a halt, and he never recovered from it.

He had his opportunities with RCR after that and where did that get him?

Oh it just goes back to people thinking that all of these drivers are some of the best in the world when reality all it takes to get into NASCAR is money I can't believe it's not common knowledge that somebody can buy their way into NASCAR.

I don't see it as snark at all more than I do just common sense.

I would wager that Libery University has something to do with Byron getting the 24 and Elliott and NAPA moving to the 9. Liberty wanted to be on the 24, and Hendrick give them a number that would make it happen.

Actually I heard it was Axalta that wanted to get back on the 24 for old time's sake and they sponsored Byron this year.

Moffitt got screwed, I think he's grown into a solid driver and was pretty successful in trucks with Red Horse before they ceased operations.

Should have had more seat time before getting thrown into Cup.

Not much potential there would probably be the consensus. Not Yates fault.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming Yates... he was just with the team when it shut down. Had they been able to survive, the stability might have helped Leicht. He did win a race for them, and finished 7th in the points in his full time season with them. Not too shabby.

The only reason Liberty sponsors Byron is because Byron's dad got Liberty University life insurance for Falwell Sr. so when he passed the University received 85 million dollars. It's a way of paying things back. So that would be a good guess that they probably wanted more relevance on the 24.

I mean this respectfully....Didn't Danica teach us that?

O exactly I certainly am not a believer that the guys that show up at a NASCAR race on Sunday are the best in the world maybe just maybe up to 10 of them would be in the class of the 50 best drivers in the world

The best include Paul Menard, Cory Lajoi, Jeffrey Earnhardt, Gray Gaulding, Gary Klutt, Cory Ware, Tommy Regan and Kevin O'Connell.

Most Cup drivers could go on and become champions in other series if they wanted to. Formula Juan included.

I don't see many of today's Cup drivers being competitive in a F1 car or Indy car. Busch brothers and Larson maybe.

Ending it because of "circumstances beyond our control" is interesting.

That is bizarre. It could simply mean that the sponsorship was always intended for Edwards and his retirement is the "circumstances". They were already locked into their commitment for this season. Or JGR might have landed another sandwich or fast food chain that demanded exclusivity? Or??

My guess is the circumstances beyond their control was Edwards retiring. They probably had an out clause and just now decided to use it.

That certainly could be the case, but it seems odd to bail out with one race left in the deal.
