SILLY SEASON 2018

I would like to see the owners forced into really cutting costs which they could do very easily. All it takes is signed agreements by the big teams not to do certain things and if you get caught you miss 5 races.

I think a spending cap on cars could be introduced to work kind of like a salary cap in other sports. Spend as much as they want on the driver but the car should have a cap.

I would like this not because of Paul but because of Menards sponsorship and maybe Paul will retire and the relationship will stay.

Menards on the 21 car?

Maybe Menard's sponsorship on a different car from the one Paul Menard drives? There could be different ways to wrap a package deal.

If Paul Menard drives the 21, I'm going to have to put away the Wood Brothers gear I just bought in the past year.

Haha man it will take away from the prestige of the 21 and the sweet combo of motorcraft, Blaney and the wood bros. But business is business and to me this feels like it could be a long term thing for Briscoe.

My guess is once John Menard is no longer obligated to ride buy for his son Menards will go away as a Nascar sponsor as the stores are only in 14 states. The Home Depot is gone and Lowes will likely leave or cut back when JJ hangs it up.

Possibly, but Blaney is my favorite driver aside from Larson and Paul Menard is just so blah. I refuse to support that guy.

Not a fan of the Paul menard announcement. Really like Blaney in the 21 and would hate to see the 21 go back to being a backmarker.... I used to try to defend Paul menard but he needs to go.

In fairness the Wood's will still probably be a part time team if it wasn't for Penske. As far as I know the plan wasn't to leave Blaney with Penske just like JGR does not plan on keeping Jones at the FR affiliate.

I think what one thing people are ignoring here is that it's extremely like IF this happens this car will essentially be a 4th Penske car. None of this would happen if Menards was getting 2nd or 3rd tier equipment. Don't be confused this would be the same resources as of right now. John and Roger want to work together. Paul does not want to stop driving otherwise the sponsorship would go to Blaney and the 12 car. I would still expect this car to be a top 15 car even with Paul driving the guy sucks but he takes care of his equipment and he typically finishes races and if you do that with a fast car you'll end up with good results.

Ty gets to race with bro and paw paw. The racing world gets to see if Menard is any better with a faster car. If that happened IMO Childress gets the short end of the stick. And another fast Ford will be born..it'll be ugly and hurt your eyes but a Ford fan will love it.

yeah your an aging multi gizzionaire, who knows, the car is obviously better I believe. Paul in the off season races something on the ice up north and does quite well.

Paul has had other sponsorship than Menards this year though. I think I've seen Valvoline and Rockstar Energy, of course Menards was on the cars as well. I dont think Menards will go away once Paul is done. Pauls not the only driver they sponsor and are active in other motorsports as well.Actually just watched the the ARCA race wich Menards is the title sponsor for.

I'm worried every team and driver will eventually be pressed for sponsorship... look at the last couple pages in this thread alone, the ideas or speculation of current sponsors throwing in the towel soon as it relates to NASCAR... I mean I get the idea of the prestige on the #21 but we might even be lucky to see that have a chance if things keep going this route...

Been that way for years, sponsors come and go Newman recently got Velveeta for a number of races, they came back into the series, interesting that Haas says he has lost 41 million in F-1 so far..its a rich mans game. Kenseth and Circle K recently came on board for JGR, Liftmaster on Kahne for 3 races, Hooters for Elliott  bunch of new faces for 2017 even Jeffery Earnhardt with HuLu on the car.
And then we have these guys they have done this every time the enter a series:

Toyota spends 7.6 times more on NASCAR than the average of all sponsors.
With deals at the sanctioning body, team and track levels, Toyota Motor North America Inc. was the biggest spender in NASCAR during the 2016 season. The company spent 7.6 times more on the sport than the average of all NASCAR sponsors.

In the past when a sponsor left there was always another to take its place but as we are seeing today that is not the case. Even when you can get a sponsor they may not be willing to pay much as was the case with Ryan Newman. Even just a few years ago if someone offered to be the primary sponsor on a cup car for 175K they would have been laughed out of the county. Now more teams will be accepting it. It will all work out though as fields will get smaller and teams won't have as much to work with but it should all even out. It may make things even better.

This is my hope, and I will cheer for Paul if he comes back to Ford. Paul in the 21 for 2-3 years with Menards on the car. He retires and Briscoe takes over.

Valvoline and Rockstar are on the car because of a relationship with Menards. Business to business deal.

way too soon to tell about Briscoe for me. He was off to a shaky start in the trucks, but if he keeps doing what he did in Texas it works for me.

I was hoping Hemric would stay in the Penske fold, I'm a huge believer of Hemric.

It is true it's way too early to tell about Briscoe but seems to have "IT" at least he did in ARCA and it seems like it's showing up in trucks.

I totally agree with you about Hemric I wish he would have not been pushed out definitely seems like a talented guy who someday will be in cup. I feel the same about Reddick too.

Isn't Hemric with RCR now I thought?

me too. When Hemeric bailed out of Kez/Penske to drive for Childress in a not that great Xfinity car, I thought what a dead end. The Childress cup side is full up with little bro next in line on the waiting list.

Good find, SOI, thanks for posting that. You are right that sponsors come and sponsors go. The trends in motor racing could be better, but could be a lot worse as well. Same is true in other sports too... McDonald"s pulling out of Olympic sponsorship after 41 years, etc, etc.

Interesting that Marlboro remains so committed to Ferrari (F1) and Ducati (MotoGP). Their logos were banned many years ago, but they remain the lead sponsor for both teams.

Sponsors come and sponsors go leaves the impression that about the same amount are coming in that are leaving which is false. Did you know that Velveeta signed on to be a primary sponsor of Ryan Newman for 175K per race? Did you realize that Gene Haas is funding the equivalent of more than an entire season of races for his team? Did you know that car counts used to be 43 and are now down to 37? Does this sound like a robust organization poised for growth?

What sports are facing the same challenges on the same level that Nascar is?

Yeah I thought that was strange about Marlboro too. My sister who was overseas recently says Marboro's are dirt cheap over there. Overall almost all sports (even stick n ball) are in a downturn. Funny how it took 41 million for Haas to begin to start squawking :D most of these dudes are mega rich and the big backers as it shows in the advertising statistics are the automobile companies and the related secondary and tertiary (autoparts, autocare etc.) organizations. The big two in Nascar specifically ISC and Speedway motorsports combined made almost 70 million dollars profit between them last year and paid dividends to their stock holders.

The sky is certainly falling. Don't forget to remind us tomorrow

I'm not sure if it's still his plan but a few years ago Jimmie said he would transition into retirement by going part-time NASCAR and taking up sports cars. Probably harder to do now with the charters and car cap but HMS could split him and a development driver in a car and he could coach them up.

Yep, I think as long as John Menard is around and still loves racing then they'll be involved to some degree.

He might do that. I remember, seems like a short time ago..probably not that short, a video special of Dale Jr. saying after he wasn't good enough to race in Cup anymore that he would continue to race and when he was an old man he would be racing somewhere on a small dirt track. sadly Jr isn't going to be able to do that, plans change. I hope Johnson's plans work out for him.

I always thought Jeff Gordon would do this plan, I'm surprised he's not racing more with Wayne Taylor after the Fox portion is done. It'd be cool to see Jimmie do the Rolex again as well as other IMSA races
