Storage building

Which side faces the sun? They the same! I'm totally confused. One side has the lines little bleached out but otherwise, same. Laid one out in the sun. Got spaghetti like but not sticky.

Lost the fat Max tape. Was using it. Spent 45 minutes wandering around looking for it while talking on phone. Could not find it. Found the other three all in same pile. Started to put one back on the pile and realized the Fat Max was sitting there but black side up. They are yellow. It perfectly blended into the hole in the tool pile! 😆

The orange one is leaning against the Fat Max. Blind as a bat am I!

Ok. Disregard previous transmission. What I thought was one shingle were two getting intimate. Vary slightly stuck together.

Thought had picture of everything but phone ate it. Maybe sent it to buddy via messenger. Not sure how that works. You'd think taking a picture would save it to phone but nope.

If push comes to shove and group of guys show up to toss roof on go to Lowe's and get couple of these. Just occurred to me, have couple pieces of underlayment could cut strips and double it over the cracks?

After thinking more will have half'ish roll of underlayment left over. That will be plenty to use as "tape" to cover the three 22 foot gaps. Probably worrying about nothing. Really need the metal angle flashing? Not what it's called but whatever. Talking to myself anyway.

Trying to figure out how to build overhang without falling over backwards. My skull no like looking up. Put couple blocks under the doors. Will tack 2x4 to each side back to structure to keep them from swinging. Probably remove the loft doors so can trim them. Top edge is inch or so too tall to clear the overhang. Tempted to shorten the overhang to 8 inches total. Don't really need it at all. Rain doesn't always fall absolutely vertical.

Got upper part of overhang kinda in place. Two nails holding a 2x4 on each one Three nails not fully set thru ODB into 2x4, tacked couple nails thru front of 2x4, then carried it up ladder and stuck it in place. Was pretty easy. It's not perfectly aligned but I can't see it from my recliner. Lower leg is slightly more complicated but much closer to the ground. Will go back at it later as got pretty hot. Appears an inch off loft doors will be plenty.

Both boards for lower leg are warped. Didn't notice until put first one up. Think that one has a screw in it? May take it down and toss it. Have plenty of 2x4's. Going to have to sister a short piece on ends of lower section. Somebody can't measure very well. Had 8.25 inches sticking out on top plate and made the other six 9.5 I think? Total overhang is now 12 ish inches. So lower end is 1.5 inches from making a connection. Easy enough fix. It won't win any beauty contests but will be fine. If I decided to could cover it so nobody would know.

Unlikely I get any underlayment on today. Storms coming. Tempted to carve a hole in back wall of shed and stuff the spare A/C in. Will put a window in the wall eventually so no damage/loss. This dude is a savage. Still hasn't fed me lunch. 1:56PM. I'M SO HUNGRY!

No luck on lower section of overhang. Really not sure how to do it when you need at least 3 hands. The rain is pending. So we done till sometime next week.

Just dawned on me didn't take any meds for my arthritis. Might explain why feel like been beat with a rubber hose. Think figured out way to hang lower section. Tomorrow is another day.

All the other supports for the overhang were run from the second rafter thru the gable rafter. So for upper section had something to lay the OSB on. Possibly drill about 867 holes thru siding and front rafter to make a rectangular hole to stick a 2x4 thru. More likely will NOT do that. But my brain is still smoking...ummm...thinking.

Some when building an overhang do it by creating a ladder of sorts. That's what have to do for the lower section. Will be half a ladder for each side.

One thing can say for sure, learned a ton doing this thing. Especially considering I almost get scared getting out of my bed, frame is on risers, should have built this stuff with the gables on the ground. Next time.

Moved the utility trailer so can use as a work surface to build some scaffolding like crap. 2x4's, 2x6's, 2x8's. Screws/nails/tape/zip-ties, etc. I can't handle the ladder being laying on the roof. Have to lean back a bit so my nose doesn't hit and feel like...

Basically going to build a shelf down the outside of the wall. Have four 12 foot 2x4, two 10 foot 2x6, four 12 foot 2x8 and whole bunch of 2ish feet 2x4's plus can cannibalize the two spare regular rafters...oh! Just remembered have couple other 8ish foot 2x4 nailed to walls inside shed that was used as angle bracing. Hmmmm? Could roll the workbench out and extend it upward? Would set it on concrete blocks so solid. Really need to get the underlayment on today. Once get a section on the rest should happen really quickly. If get the shelf/scaffolding to work no reason I can't do the shingling of both sides of lower sections.

Haven't decided how tall it'll be, probably 6ish feet up the wall.

I find as I get older it is necessary to invent various methods of performing tasks I could do ten years ago without them. I no longer climb ladders and harken back to a time when climbing ladders was part of everyday activity.

Got overhang mostly done. Probably add a few short 2x4 blocks to help straighten everything. Next cut two 44 x12 pieces of OSB and nail it on. Probably end up boxing it in when get ready to caulk & paint. Cut & cover is the name of the game in car pen trey. Have some trim I may try to use as a face board?

Really tempted to toss that one 2x4. Between it's warpage and the crooked cut OSB that's next to it...yikes! I'd love to go up and try to straighten the edge of that OSB but too chicken. Needs nearly 3/4 taken off at upper part. Part of the problem is that gable isn't absolutely square on this side. Leaning back little.

Who built this thing anywho?

Did cut the two 12" x 44" OSB. If not raining in morning maybe get them on and figure out exactly how to build the shelf/scaffolding.

Maybe try to use the two step ladders with 2x6 or 2x8 strung between them as a work surface. The underlayment cut to 12 foot length isn't particularly heavy but kinda like wrestling a carpet you laying on a wall? Maybe put some strips of blue painters tape on every 3 feet or so? It's my first time using it on a 18/12 pitch so no idea how it will go. Have a hammer tacker but again, first time using it. All a learning situation.

Trimmed that crooked OSB. Somehow this section is longer than other side. Seems to take 45ish long piece of OSB. I'll check with the architect and review the plans. Sun popped out. I started sweating. Can't be doing that. Really need to pop the lower rafters leg loose on other side and reposition. Little too high at the top. It'll be waiting. Had piece of OSB clamped in place just too many gaps to suit me. Have more than half sheet so will try again. Maybe do little better job of measuring this time.

How many t's are in measuring?

Finished the overhang. Tried to put some underlayment on but that ain't happening with one person. It's like spreading out a 12 foot long 36 in wide bath towel on the side of the wall. Alone. Spaghetti. Once was out in sun for 10 minutes HOT SPAGHETTI! Figured out pretty quick, put it back inside and forget about letting it warm up. Yikes! Set the 12K BTU spare A/C on the bench with box fan on top of it. Need to punch a hole in the wall for it as the heat coming out the back offsets the cool coming out the front. Basis of thermodynamics I guess. Think will cut hole in the 3/4' OSB covering the theoretical side barn door that ain't gonna happen. Just put a stud in and get another sheet of siding.

Forget about it.jpg

Gotz the hot side pointing out. Be cool as a cucumber in there come December. Really accomplished about nothing. Boss even worked me thru lunch. Had bowl of Raisin Bran around 9AM. Half a blueberry turnover. Still not hungry.

A/C install another of those temporary things.

Unless it works...need another sheet of siding to finish it.

When I say finish it I mean basically start all over and do it right. I suck so bad at engineering a wall structure. Should have built a little 4x7 wall dealio, slid it in place, few nails and bam Grace is your Uncle. Or something like that. Didn't use any of that one ton 3/4" OSB. Christ that thing is heavy. Used the leftover of the 7/16 for lower section and some 25 y/o ex-roof for upper part.

Building scaffolding. Probably need couple more 12 foot 2x4 but we'll see once it quits raining. The 12k A/C is kicking butt. Set on 80 and maintains with doors closed. Going to build some of it on the workbench. Few lag bolts, screws, nails, some duck tape... it'll be fine.

Solid as Sears. Wait? Need to add some lag bolts, 75 more nails, couple rolls of duct tape, then slap it and say..."that ain't going anywhere"...

Got three lag bolts, 47 nails, two 2x4 pieces of OSB attached from shed to F&R vertical legs so she don't try to boogie down. Couple nails in each of the walk boards. Will nail other end once I get brave enough to get up thar. Attach the handy rail. Then after messing around all day, it'll rain.

At least now have a work surface. Have one more crooked 2x8 to extend the length. Will move one when needed. Then IF I get the underlayment on this side, have to move the whole thing to other side! Pretty likely will do underlayment AND shingles on one side THEN move this abomination.

Did i mention how much I hate & suck at this stuff?

Block under the middle crossmember. Cross member was nailed to 2x6, then Simpson strongtie nailed on that's covered up now.. Wasn't very secure IMO. But I think it'll stay for day or three. Can see the OSB brace at bottom of ladder so legs don't try to go break dancing on me. Now to climb up there...

Got one piece on. It's the one that went nuclear fission from being in the sun. Instead of rolling up it folded. Can just razor knife the wrinkles and put a piece over it. Will see what it does with some Sun. Gonna use this old fiberglass ladder to create rest of work surface. Have a 2x8 on it and will cover that with some 1/2" OSB that's quite vintage. Worst case I fall thru it in a heap.
