If they are like drink beverages anything that is edible is a competitor.
And FWIW we used to stop early on race mornings and load up with Subway Subs, probably around 7 or 8 am. They could be ate when purchased and they were great for dropping in the cooler, and eating at the track. It was a cheaper alternative to track food, with no lines and missed race time, either.
Last of all, I would take a Sub over a doughnut almost anytime. Doughnuts are more like getting nutrition from a bag of cheetos.
I'm sure they tasted about the same after being in the cooler for eight hours as they were when you bought them. The doughnuts may not be very nutritious, but at least they taste good.
