The Announcers Thread

Muted the last five laps, I didn't need a bunch of screaming to tell me what I was supposed to think. Most racing people know Truex was going to make his move if he had any to make in the last couple of laps. Since listening to the replay of the last couple of laps with the sound on, I am glad I did.

I turned it down to a whisper with 3 to go for the same reason. Much better.

I don't usually get into the announcers bashing thread, but today was TOO MUCH. Between the over the top hyperbole, the sheer amount of blather and them trying to yell over the volume of the race cars drove me insane. Even Jr. sucked today. My God do I miss Ned Jarrett and Barney Hall. I was never a big Eli Gold guy, but even HE is starting to look good in comparison.

Callers, But the morning drive crew said its ok this one time. Stupid.
Men and women used to dress up when leaving their homes. I guess if people these days can wear baggy shorts, flip flops, tattoos, and pajamas out in public, I reckon it's okay for a few TV guys not to wear suits and ties.

I think Jr was not as comfortable isolated on the turn. However, Steve is insane as is Burton. They both sound almost the same when they rattle so fast, so much, that I’m sure they are hyperventilating. Agree the over-drama was unnecessary and aggravating.

It seemed there was some promise early, as the racing was great, and they were handing off to each announcer as the action got to the, (similar to radio/MRN).

At least Mikey and DW weren't sitting at two other turns also.

I've always been a fan of Kyle Petty.

Watched a Moto-Gp this morning .... what a pleasure to listen to a race broadcast where somebody actually knows how to call a race.

How's my boy doing? He's been hot lately. Back to back wins from the last race I saw a few weeks ago.

Holding his own quite well, pulled of a 2nd place today behind Dovi. Looks like he might be on a Repsol Honda next year, I am expecting great things to happen. Why aren't you watching ?

It's hard for me to. I dont get the channel the races are on so I have to randomly catch it on youtube when it's posted a week later or have to find it online.

I lost touch with the sport ever since they moved it to the network they show it now.

Yeah, I had to get the channel special so I could watch. I used to follow World Superbike but I just don't have time anymore

I didn't think it was bad at all but I was honestly not paying a ton of attention to what they were saying the last stage. Even if I was, there probably wasn't much that was going to bother me about that race LOL. Woo!!!

Didn’t think the announcers were that bad, it was a bit different I guess. Jr sounded uncomfortable all race, not his best work but he’s still so new. Burton is Burton, and Steve I’ve gotten used to. I still think Rick Allen is the worst and that hipster Rutledge....keep it. Bagley was the highlight for me yesterday, I find him really smooth in his delivery. Someone absove mentioned they miss Eli Gold, he was so good ( NASCAR on TNN). But Barney Hall was the GOAT on the radio, many childhood memories of him while driving with my parents on racedays to whatever we had to do, the relief I had when my father found the right radio station that had the race and then hearing Barney’s voice.

I muted over 1/2 the race, geeeezzzzzz!!!!!! guys give it a rest, the loud screaming BS has got to stop and Rick A over and over, Greeeeen Flag in the Aiiiiiiir! Gimme DW back., yep that coming from me.

I will give them my thoughts this week, again, on the broadcasters in the Nascar Fan Council, FWIW.

I don't like the false hype. There were 10-15 laps left and they were trying to make it seem like it was do or die. In truth that's an eternity on a Road Course. Anyone who would be honest with themselves would say so much. But they're in the business of creating excitement I guess.....

It's a shame that no one was able to keep Bob Jenkins active in the sport. There was obviously health and personal tragedy involved with his decision to stay away. With that said, he's "only" 70 which means he could still be going strong as a lead announcer....

Yeah Bagley is really polished and has been in that setting for a long time. I imagine they brought him on as a center piece that the others could piggy back off of.

I had the NBC feed on my scanner yesterday (I could hear MRN through the loudspeakers)...anybody catch the gem from Rick about how MTJ wanted to pass Chase because he didn't want anybody else to threaten the BIG 3? lmao

Good God what a twit.

Sat down to watch the race and they went into turn one. and damn

I guarantee every little bit of contact Friday and Saturday will result in Rick Allen screaming "CONTACT!!!"

Steve saying "The pressure of the playoffs coming is causing the aggressiveness we are seeing " and then Jeff BUrton saying "YOUR RIGHT STEVE, THIS IS WHAT THE PLAYOFFS DONE, THE PRESSURE IS ON THESE GUYS TO GET AS MANY POINTS AS THEY CAN GET WHICH IS MAKING THESE GUYS BE MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN WHAT WE ARE USE TO SEEING, BECAUSE THEY WANT THESE PLAYOFF POINTS, THATS WHAT THIS SYSTEM HAS DONE, IT HAS CAUSED THESE GUYS TO NOT WORRY ABOUT WHO THEY UPSET, THEY NEED THESE PLAYOFF POINTS!"

Rick Allen is a good pit reporter. Leave him there forever. Steve should mostly just talk about the cars. Dale Jr can say whatever he wants because he entertains me.

Jenkins was great play by play - and BP was outstanding. Great crew ESPN had on Sundays - guys in the pits were solid too.

I try not to bash on the crew when they’re new, but it can be tough. This NBC crew clearly seems like the JV team, it’s not even close. And it isn’t like Fox is great.

I think they (all) spend too much time trying to prognosticate and say how the next events are going to shake out before they happen - instead of just focusing on the racing that’s going on the track. The radio guys are much better at that because they have to presume you’re not seeing it and you need that visual! But it does make for a better race experience IMO.

I can not stand to listen to Jeff Burton, nor either of the Waltrips, what was wrong with Allen Best ? And Little E doesn't have a great voice either, but I like having him comment every now and then. Oddly, not being a Jeff Gordon fan, I like him as an announcers as long as he stops blowing the Hendricks horn.
Last nights Bristol race, I turned it off as two announcers were going nuts about how Kyle Bush was going so much faster than most the cars. It was already explained several times, a race car is much faster without a rear end panel, which Bush lost ( and Nascar said it was okay ? ) It reduced drag, drag slows a car down, ir created more rear down force, down force on the rear adds traction, better traction makes more speed.
Plus the car was now lighter than legal limits. Yes even a few pounds makes a big difference, on accelerating and braking, also better gas mileage. No one talked about the huge advantage having the drivers side pushed in. Areo dynamic advantage as it is not as wide and puts more downforce on left rear.
These announcers were talking like oh my god, llok at how great a driver he is driving this beat up wrecked car that fast. It was so sickening I could not listen to them nor squeaky Jeff Burton. a minute longer.
I am not sure but I think the decklid was also pushed up giving that car further advantage, and what about the front panel, wasn't it distorted giving it more of a angled down advantage ?

^^ and Rick Allen was back to screaming his fool head off over the top of the screaming gerbils. I too turned the sound way down, too much non stop squeaking. I wonder who's idea it was to have the pit reporters screaming at the top of their lungs about how loud it was. I guess it was so the guys in the booth could catch a breath and go at it again.

This might come off tasteless but I’ll be honest, can’t imagine Rick Allen or Adam Alexander handling something like the Wickens crash today as well as Leigh Diffey. Goes without saying but I hope we never see them bumble through it.

I'm still wait and see with Dale Jr, none of these guys can touch Ned Jarrett, Buddy Baker, or Benny Parsons.

It doesn't matter who goes in the booth, they are controlled by the producer
and until you get a race fan producer fans will complain. NBC went out and hired a "awe shucks" boy and turned him into another girly squealer like Burton.
To prove my point, what was the main attraction yesterday???? The Announcers and it just happened that they talked about racing. Not much of the race was shown as they were to busy promoting the promoters.

I thought the broadcast from Darlington was NBC's best broadcast of the year so far. They obviously changed gears from the constant points, points, points chatter, not much gerbil in a trap screaming, and the producers highlighting the throwback cars and telling some of the history about the car and driver car during the race was a nice touch. I don't think I heard one over the top long winded Burton Dr Phil tells what the driver is feeling all the race long.

Agreed. Much less of Burton hyperventilating about the points system, Rick Allen in a secondary role, increased presence of Jarrett and Petty. All good moves. It's almost like they are actually listening.

I thought the JR, Kyle Petty and Dale Jarrett Trio worked out good!

I think all of these guys (Fox and NBC) are competent to do the job they were hired for. The problem as I see it is somewhere along the way somebody has hammered it into their heads that even a second of dead air is the most horrible thing that can happen. The downside of that is most painfully obvious with Jeff Burton. He keeps yammering away until he is over running his own thoughts and sounds like "insert derogatory mental condition here". Another thing I don't care for is the way they try to do that "Here's what's gonna happen" and then the exact opposite happens. They then spend the next 5 to 8 minutes trying to vindicate themselves and completely overlook whats happening on the track. I don't have too much of a problem with the "little girl screaming" when it actually fits with whats happening on the track. The "slide job" comes to mind. I thought that was great. For just a moment there it was like having them being like they really are. Just a couple of former racers reacting to a great moment. With all that said, I'm dreading all the lead up programing to the Brickyard race. I bet one of the big topics is going to be the continued downturn at Hendrick Motor Sports. I'm really looking forward to Burton's half hour rambling about how HMS is going to have to track the batch numbers on Billy Byrons valve train and if there's any commonality with what happened to Jimmy Johnson's engine. I feel there's a point where it's just too much techno babble about things the majority of viewers care little or nothing about to say nothing about actually understanding it.
