What should NASCAR do with Qualifying?

Let the drivers draw their spot before the race, give up on the ****tshow.
This is it!! Use a bingo ball cage & balls numbered 1 - 40. Each driver rolls the cage the ball # they get is their pit stall & their qualifying order. Quick time already has an advantage starting P1 no need to add to that advantage getting pit box #1.
Great drama!! Ball selection CAN BE TELEVISED with a commercial or a dozen between cage rolls. Single car Q, Track length determines the wait time before the next car Q attempt = there will always be cars on track.
As a side show maybe drivers can somehow trade their balls for a better Q spot & pit box. Maybe after everyone has their balls a Monster girl can roll another cage & get 2 balls. The drivers with those #'s have the option to trade with each other.
Y'all can sort the details if more than 40 cars show up.

OR

Don't change anything I have NEVER had as much fun watching the Q cluster (?) as I do now +
threads like this are fun.

It may indeed have been the owners' idea. It may have been the drivers. It may have been somebody here.

Regardless of who's idea it is, only the leader can make the decision to implement it. He's where the buck stops, regardless of who thought it up.

might be why he said this ya think?

O’Donnell replied “absolutely” when asked whether he was angered by the incessant controversy and openly wondered whether drivers were trying to subvert the process.
“I think it’s ridiculous, candidly,” he said. “I know the drivers did not like this qualifying before the season. Part of you says, ‘Are we doing this on purpose to get rid of it?’ I know it can be done. I know we have the best drivers in the world and crew chiefs to figure it out. We seem to want to outdo each other, and that results in sitting on pit road.
O’Donnell said any switch would be met by resistance from team owners who lobbied for group qualifying to help hold down costs. A move to single-car qualifying would mean teams focusing on more expensive and specialized parts and pieces.
“If we have to go back to single car, simple,” he said. “We’ll do that. It won’t be popular with some of the owners, but unfortunately, we’re getting put in this position.”

Doesn't an impound cure this issue?
And once again...…….. I really don't care how much money they waste.

nope unless they don't have qualifying. All this does is remove part of the qualifying set up parts and pieces

Single car, lined up according to the finish position of the last race (I doubt anyone would try to finish worse to get a better qualifying position for the upcoming race.) New cars that weren't in the previous race qualify first based on points or race entry dates. As mentioned, qualify in race trim. This also eliminates the silly "cool down" cycles and stuff they're doing now. They seem to race OK without cool down cycles.

Rabbit...or chaser
I forget the name of it but most of the teams have the software. It shows the speed and what lines the other drivers are running on the track so they can see where they are gaining or losing on the fastest cars.

The only negative to them going back to single car now is the half dead motors they're running. Those old videos of these guys hauling the mail around the 1.5s for 2 laps are so sick to watch. Who in the hell thought that was boring?!

Never again, unfortunately.

This is part of the reason why they're hesitant to return to single car on the 1.5s imo. They are not thrilled at showing off those throttle inputs, wide open and glued is normally a plate track deal.

Can't believe I am saying this, but I agree with Kevin Harvick 100% on this issue. On his weekly radio show, he just lit O'Donnell up for even thinking that the qualifying debacle was a conspiracy by the drivers to get it to go away. I was stunned when Steve said this as well. Kevin took no prisoners on getting after him for it. Secondly, Harvick got after O'Donnell for leaking drivers' hate for this system (even though we all knew it). You cannot have a NASCAR exec indicting the drivers like that--terrible and out of character for Steve. Harvick said that the solution is in single car qualifying for 1.5's and up, and keep stuff the same for road courses and short tracks. Done. Over. Period. Kevin should bag TV as a retirement gig, and take over the stupid Bagley and Pistone stupidity on weekday mornings.

I am framing this post.

Well said, agreed on everything but the out of character part.

NASCAR Corporate Culture -- they must control the narrative or fear losing control.

NASCAR leadership worries that the lunatics (drivers and fans) are gonna takeover the asylum if they show weakness -- so why not make a counter-accusation that the jacked-up Qualifying is someone else's sabotage of their grand idea, in a weak attempt to redirect blame... :D

Like Harvick just got thru saying on Race Hub, we tried it (drafting qualifying) 5 years ago and it didn't work, and the talk about it needs to go away like the inspection talk a couple years ago.

NASCAR doesn't seem to have figured it out yet, but their drivers run the sport. Even if they are doing it on purpose, what are you going to do? If they came out tomorrow with the backing of their owners and sponsors and said they aren't driving this garbage aero package and hockey puck tires until they fix it, what choice would NASCAR have? Who do you think the fans are going to side with? The drivers have all the power and NASCAR needs to respect that instead of all this talk about behind the scenes fines if they refuse to toe the line. It's all BS. All of your athletes are telling you your idea is trash and it's not working, and your response is to tweak it further and push forward because you think the fans and TV partners enjoy it. Did they not hear the FOX booth last Friday? Nobody is enjoying that ****. Can it, grow a pair, and admit that you made a mistake and do what you know needs to be done instead of constantly trying to fit square pegs into round holes.

I'm so sick of Steve O'Donnell.

Good news and bad news with O’D’s remarks. The good news is that no one out of the Nascar loop would have heard them and the bad news is the jackass had the temerity to utter them publicly. O’D’s lack of judgement is staggering and if you didn’t question his gray cell count and leadership ability prior to the remarks you have to now.

Yup, he went small.

But NASCAR Leaders have delivered more directed comments and commentary on their side of the story -- then to issue fines for drivers speaking out on this issue. So, while the give-and-take has been more open in social media, NASCAR is showing some restraint in sanctioning critical opinions.

I think it is fine for driver’s like Kyle Busch to say anyone can drive the car or Clint Bowyer to say he can’t tell if he is down a cylinder with the new rules. I don’t think the drivers should be able to question the integrity of Nascar or it’s employees nor should Nascar do the same to the drivers.

NASCAR runs the show, the drivers and the owners dont. NASCAR has the tracks , the licenses, the sponsors, the TV deals. If they think they can break off and make a new series, well good luck. Ask Bruton Smith.

I'm not talking about breaking off and making a new series, I'm talking about refusing to climb in the cars, or teams just not showing up to the track period. What is NASCAR going to do? Make a bunch of cars and pull some drivers off the street? Good luck to them, too.

Well you are forgetting the millions of dollars in sponsor obligations, they WILL show and and they WILL get in the car. Anyway, this is being blown out of proportion and will be an after thought in a month.

The problem is that if the teams and drivers withhold services a lot of little people get hurt. Everyone from track workers, team workers, fans that have bought tickets and planned vacations around races etc.

Over the years NASCAR has been famous for making rules and not seeing the consequences of them. When mistakes are realized instead of fixing them they double down and make things worse. IDK if it is ignorance or arrogance or a lot of both.

Oh I agree, I was just making the point that without the drivers and team owners, NASCAR doesn't have a sport. Therefore they might want to do a little less barking and more listening.

NASCAR listens to the drivers now more then ever, but they listen more to who pay the bills.

Which is why I wish we truly could find out who asked for this type of qualifying. If FOX was part of that, they sure haven't done a good job of having their employees put a sock in it during the broadcast cause the guys in the booth were audibly annoyed last Friday.

This is true, but that's also a big problem when the folks paying the bills don't have a damn clue about racing or what the fans want. I think the TV networks want this and NASCAR wants that, and NASCAR is always willing to compromise. So NASCAR gets paid and they have their stooges like O'Donnell insult our intelligence by telling us how great their new ideas are working out.

I think there are plenty of "stooges" on both sides myself, more than enough to go around. O'Donnell is director of competition so yeah this falls in his area. What are they going to do about it? well in most people's eyes, on drafting tracks it's broke and needs some kind of fix.

Nascar has a long list of dubious employees from Helton, Darby, Brian, Gary Nelson, Dewar and O’Donnell. Probst sounds like an idiot and the jury is out on Phelps.

You can’t succeed long term with people like this, IMO.

Very true. NASCAR is dealing from a position of weakness so they are going to get pushed around.

I agree as Nascar is full of buffoons and the networks are not exactly filled with deep thinkers when it comes to racing.

They could do group qualifying, have the cars separated by 5-10 seconds (depending on track size) when they go out that way they can't draft and ****. And if the cars decide to get in a pack and draft, disallow their times.

How many cars constitutes a pack? If somebody slower drifts back to me, are we a pack?
