Cup RACE thread --- Martinsville

I totally missed the race and hoping to watch on the NBC App later. I’m floored absolutely floored Harvick missed the championship race next week. Incredible, it shows what an incredible WWE gimmick inspired way this sport has crowned its champions since 04. This was bound to happen sooner or later I guess...your best driver during the season gets jobbed in an effort to produce “Game 7 moments.” They tried to replicate 1992 but they missed the point in that 1992 happened organically in a much more fair points system. The Chase For The Cup/Playoff points system has been a gimmick, joke, stupid and hokey...I will die on this hill. Feel bad for Harv, he once again has a career year but no championship berth to show for it. He’s in good company with this system screwing Jeff Gordon many times and Carl Edwards too. To me....you can talk about aero packages, tracks/schedules and the new cars but the biggest problem NASCAR has is the way their crown their champion. I’d love to see them go back to the Winston Cup full season points system but emphasis on More points for wins. Alas that’s another discussion for another day, waiting for that nbc app to load the race later.

Wouldn’t mind seeing that at all and Harvick is definitely good enough at Phoenix to do it, but I don’t know if NASCAR would allow that to happen. I don’t think it’s just coincidence that a Championship race has never been won by anyone outside the Championship 4.

Exactly. NASCAR won't let that happen.

Bowman got passed but I guess that doesn’t matter
He knew he hadn't had a car all day to compete with those top runners and I'm glad he stayed classy and didn't crash anyone out trying to keep his position. Chase had one of the best cars on the property and about the only one that had anything for him was MT. With Harvick out Chase's odds just went up to win his first Championship. But if he does I'm sure there will be a lot of people downplaying it due to the 2 penalties he had overturned this year. But the 9 team will have won a legit championship in my eyes.

Your probably right. Besides the other 30 some odd cars are supposed to tippy toe around the whole race

I think this is only the second year that the top 4 are not the top 4.

Yeah the format is a joke, but just think of all the New England Patriots fans that NASCAR won over today because of Kevin Harvick's uncanny similarity. They won't be watching football on Sundays anymore when a NASCAR race is on, you can be sure of that.

Had to check twice, but Chase has a clock and his dad does NOT!
It took Bill years to get any short track win at all and if I remember right, he only had a couple in his entire career. In spite of all of his other successes, that just didn't seem to be his forte.

I hope Chase can win next week but if he can't, it'd be funny to see Harvick win it just to see all of the over-torqued head bolts around here snap!

He has every right to.
Actually it was a very calm interview and my hats off to Harvick because I'm sure he was pretty disappointed to say the least. The dude drove his as-s off all day and all year but had to give it a Hail-Mary on the last corner.

Harvick walled it at Texas because NASCAR allowed racing in wet conditions and lost Kansas because of a ****** aero package where all the lead car has to do is block like NASCAR 2003. Yeah they screwed the pooch at Martinsville, but given how fast they were at Kansas, and Texas before the wreck, complete joke it came down to this. Everybody is okay with it now because the most popular driver won to advance this week. When logano beats him next week me thinks a lot of these fans will all of a sudden hate the format again. I’m a chase fan too, hate that I can’t fully enjoy a win because of this stupid WWE BS

NASCAR likes making comparisons to football to justify this mess, but they are completely missing their audience.

They need to focus on the World Bocce League.

But Harvick caused a wreck at Talladega in 2015.

(Everyone keeps forgetting NASCAR changed the rules mid-race and screwed Harvick.)

not many of us old timers left anymore. the chase is one big reason why in my opinion. maybe the current television contract makes it worth it to nascar. but I don't believe this way of determining a champion even increases interest from those that have never watched the sport. only makes it seem more contrived. JMO

Because the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets can take the field in the AFC Championship and interfere with the Steelers vs. Chiefs game.

I'll take the original Chase format over this :bsflag:

Why didn't any of the other race cars driving on the wet conditions wall it?

Were they on a different track than Harvick or did I miss something?

I want to be excited for Chase. But this playoff **** is so slimy...

Harvick has the best season arguably since Gordon...gonna finish 5th in points cause of one “off” race.

Also **** Erik Jones. What a fairy. Dude gets canned by JGR and protects their cash cow driver like the ****** lemming he is. Dude deserves RPM. Match made in heaven.
Why arent you mad a Bubba for racing the 4 so hard and banking off his door? Hmmmmmmm

You won't bring in new fans with the old format.

The hill I will die on is that the first few Chase systems were the best we ever had.

Nope, they were on the same track...but they probably were not running the same setup and maybe not the same speed or they may have crashed too. In fact I thought at least one other car did crash if I remember right.

Who says you wont? Formula 1 runs a full season points system and is still pretty popular all over the world
