2022 Silly Season

Tony must really be in love this time. The only time he's raced has been the SRX races and a few sprint car races early in the year. He's rarely at the Cup races.

Maybe, but I also don't think he fully supports the current rules package and state of the sport

I agree with the last part. I know he doesn't like some of the people running things too. But he's done very little racing this year, the love bug finally got him. :D

What if they don't want Aric anymore or exit the sport?
Well Aric has put his sponsors in victory lane and Matt hasn’t, and thats really all the justification a company needs. Plus Smithfield seems to love Aric. Although they had some serious damages done to them during the pandemic so they may not be in the same funding position they were in a year ago.

On the other hand, during the Michael Annett discussion, we were repeatedly told that winning often doesn't matter to the sponsor.

This has been discussed before. Annett's father owned a huge Pilot distributorship. The family business basically financed his racing career.

None of that is in dispute. I merely posited the POSSIBILITY that TMC and Pilot Flying J MIGHT want to continue race car sponsorship, since it would seem to be a great demographic fit for them, ESPECIALLY if they have the possibility of actually WINNING races and competing for championships.

Putting sponsorship aside, Matt D. would be a huge upgrade over Almirola. There's no question about that.
Statements that have "no question" need to have plenty of data to support them. Both drivers have had top shelf cars for the last two years...

I have a question.

Continuous mediocrity is an upgrade?
For the last two years, while Matt has been in the #21, it's a statistical wash:

However, just 2021, Matt's clearly better.

Aric: 9 wins in NASCAR's top three divisions

Matt: 0 wins in NASCAR's top three divisions

But sure, let's go with Matt being a "huge" upgrade, no question.

Unfair comparison. Aric has had many more chances in Xfinity and Trucks than Matt. I could make the argument that the 10 is better than the 21, but they’re pretty equal there

People don’t like to hear that. They think anyone can win in any car. Don’t care about the whole one person have had better rides than others.

I don't think that would be a huge upgrade but more of the same ol same ol. I would think that SHR would try to either recruit out of Xfinity for a diver who had some backing, or a driver in the Cup series with a better record with a bit of sponsorship

Imagine moving Riley Herbst to Cup.

Does Ford Performance really have any youngsters outside of Gilliland and Deegan that are worth the possible call-up?

To Xfinity that is.

I don’t understand why they’re not stealing Austin Hill or JHN away but maybe John Hunter thinks Toyota has a place for him?

JHN has stated that he has sponsorship, but not to the tune of a full-time JGR Xfinity ride.

Not to mention, the likes of Hamlin, KFB, and MTJ are not getting any younger. I feel as if he's going to wait it out to see if JGR would want him in a Cup seat in the future. Imagine a more mature Ty Gibbs, JHN, and C Bell in Cup within the next three to five years.

JHN in Xfinity in the 98 or 22 would have been great to see next season. Also, I agree that Ford was crazy to let him go as well.

Idk.. cars coming out of the Penske shop have been a lot faster than SHR ones. I don't think Custer and Briscoe are THAT bad. If anything I would guess the 21 is a better car but again that's just a guess. They're equal enough cars for the sake of the argument.

Hypothetically if the 10 team was choosing between Aric and Matt they should just keep Aric for the continuity. I have not seen anything from Matt that makes me think he's better than Aric. In my perfect NASCAR fantasy world Erik Jones gets the 21 and Matt takes the 43 or something but that's not the world we live in.

This I can get behind.

This is the only accurate comparison of the two in this thread.
It’s the only one that puts Matt in a favorable light.

There’s a line between race winners and those who haven’t gotten the job done. 3 more opportunities exist.
