Old Chase threads

Over a three race span, the guy who arguably performed the best all year (Gordon) gets 2nd, 2nd, and wrecked while competing for a win that he was clearly in position to obtain. Life's not fair, I get it. But try and argue with a straight face that Newman deserves it more.

At the end of the day it is what it is, I just don't understand how anyone can argue that the new format is a legitimate system to determine the rightful champion.

Newman's average finish over those 3 races is 9th, Gordon's is 11th. Should we punish Newman for keeping his nose clean and doing better? I don't get your point. Gordon had three races to move into the Championship round and he failed. What else can I say?

So if some clown accidentally wrecks Hamlin's TRD Toyota late in the race today, he doesn't advance. Should he be punished for someone else's mistake? Something that was completely beyond his control?

That's racing man! You just described perfectly what happened to Kyle Busch at 'Dega. None of this is completely within the driver's control. Hell, this Chase is criticized, but the fact is that the fastest car (4) since the '14 rules package test in Charlotte last December is right there poised to win it all. We watch because this isn't about the fastest car or the best team--it's about being the best, fastest, and luckiest at the right time.

I am not passionate about any format. Couldn't care less really. I will always watch because I love racing. So, having said that, what the holy hell is a rightful champion? Best car over the course of the year? Cool, then go back and crown Kyle Busch the '08 Champion. The rightful champion is the one who is there at the end, and it will be that way this year too.

Jeffrey, in my opinion Newman didn't do better than Gordon, that's the thing. Not in any of the last three races, not all season. I'll just agree to disagree.

Revman, the fact that Talladega is an elimination race perfectly illustrates how ridiculous this format is. Luck is by far the most important factor in determining the sport's champion. That's a problem in my eyes.

When you break it all down it is exactly the same in the past championship formats. Drivers have been "screwed over" before. Luck just is part of the game, some just make their own luck like Harvick did today.

But he did, it is right there on paper. Basically what you want is to say to Newman: "Hey there buddy, I know you did your job and did everything right, and scored more points than Gordon over the last three races, but just because he is Jeff Gordon he deserves this more than you. You understand right? Thanks doll."

So Kez wrecking Gordon means that Newman deserves it more? Yeah, keep believing that.

I hope Hamlin's engine blows next week and Harv and Logano get caught up in a wreck that isn't their fault. Then all the koolaid drinkers can say how Ryan Newman deserves the title the most with his four top 5's and all, because Newman "did his job" and he's the most deserving champion. It's right there on paper!

The only reason newman has a higher finishing avg these last 3 races is bc Kez knocked Gordon out to 29th at Texas. In terms of track position before the final flag, Gordon out performed Newman in every race. Thats what hes getting at.

**** happens, guess what **** happened with the older formats too. Quit blaming the format, especially one that is more forgiving to mistakes and bad luck than before. Gordon had his chances to win and be in, but he didn't.

I can see the headlines now : "Winless Newman wins Championship with 18th place finish at Homestead"

Sorry Harv, sorry Joey, but Newman played the game better, he deserves it the most! He did his job, that's why he's champion!

Simple facts are France made a system which he believed rewarded winning the most.

Newman: 0 wins (in)
Hamlin: 1 win (in)

Keselowski: 6 wins (out)
Gordon: 4 wins (out)

BFrance shipped the bed with this format. He'll have many questions to answer & changes to make to the format... again. This is all an experiment to gain ratings. Itll change every few years as long as ratings suck.

He doesnt give a **** about the fans. He doesnt give a **** about the racing. All he desires is the $$$.

He will be the Champion deemed by Nascar. Deal with it.

No the drivers did. Like I said before I don't blame France or Nascar, I blame the drivers for ****ting the bed when it mattered the most. Blame Gordon and Kesolowski for allowing 2 non chase drivers to steal wins in 2 out of 3 races this past round.

Here's what happens next week. Hamlin's TRD engine gives up the ghost on lap 59. Bye bye Denny, better luck next year!

Race leader Harvick pulls up to lapped traffic. Danica is ferociously racing the BK Racing cars for 31st when they make contact, and poor Harv can't avoid the wreck, causing serious damage to his car. Too bad so sad, go home Harv, you're done!

20 laps to go, Kyle Busch drives hard underneath leader Logano when he gets loose and slides up into Logano, causing the 22 to hit the wall. Uh oh Joey, to the garage you go!

Ryan Newman, leisurely cruising along in 16th place, clicks off a few more laps and there you have it folks, Newman is crowned 2014 Sprint Cup Champion. He's so deserving!

Sh!t happens.

I understand, but like I said **** happens, **** has always happened. Fact is Nascar has set up a system now that makes it easier to recover from **** happening. Jeff Gordon had his chance 3 times to win and be in. Oops.

Youre only tooting your horn because Harvick won this evening. Thats plain as day.

Gordon finished 2nd in 2/3 previous rounds. Thats not ****ting the bed. Its not ****ting the bed either when a caution comes out while Gordon is setting sail to win, then Kez bullies his way through Gordon & didnt even win. its not like Gordon DNFd all 3 rounds or the team blew the set ups. Get real dude. The man has had the best season all year out of everyone.

With that its late & Im out. Looking forward to Gordon's 92nd at Homestead next weekend :)

No, I have been preparing all season long for Harvick not making it. He did, great! I am happy as hell, but if he didn't I wouldn't be blaming the format. If he doesn't win next week, oh well he gave it his best shot. Did Gordon?

Look at Newman's performance throughout any significant portion of the year and tell me you honestly believe he deserves to be tied for the points lead going into the final race. I just don't understand how anyone can think that's legit. Zero wins, four top 5's, 51 laps led? Come on now.

They arent looking at the season. They are only looking at Mville, Texas & Phoenix. Impossible to see stats over an entire season it is.

Yeah, defo. No doubt in my mind. Chose the wrong line last week. Other than that he hasn't put a wheel wrong.

Check the average finish for the whole Chase. Newman was better than Gordon by 2 positions. Newman statistically has had a better chase than Gordon. Sorry. I understand bad luck being part of it, but Gordon has his chance to claim on of those spots. Fact is that going into today none of the 8 had a spot clinched. So you can't say anyone of them before today deserved a spot next week.

Maybe if Hendrick had invoked team orders at Martinsville....or had Junior been his friend,...Jeff would still be in the hunt. ;)

Man, just imagine if they would've had this super awesome Chase format back in 1994. Earnhardt who?!? Maybe Ted Musgrave would've been the 1994 Winston Cup Champion!!! Rick Mast and Todd Bodine had a couple top 5's in the last few races, maybe they would've had a shot too!!!

Bad luck has always been part of it, how come he didn't win Martinsville, or today even? He had his chance to grab his spot, and he failed at it. Sorry.

Maybe, you never know. Or maybe Earnhardt would have tailored his racing to the new format, and maybe he would have been 8 time, 9 time, of *gasp maybe even 10 time. Could have, should have, would have....

Martinsville: He didn't wreck Junior

Phoenix: He didn't wreck Harvick

Shame on him

Why do you think he has to wreck someone to win the race??? Someone should have been in his ear before that last restart telling him 2nd wasn't good enough to get in. He should have raced harder. He didn't, that is on him and his team.

Sorry Bobby Labonte, turns out you're not the 2000 Champion after all. Looks like a four way battle between Jeremy Mayfield, Steve Park, Ward Burton, and Jerry Nadeau! And look at who won the finale....

Congrats JERRY NADEAU, 2000 Chase for the Winston Cup Champion!!!

It isn't fair! He has Jesus on his side! How are you supposed to compete with that!
My post reminds me of a joke.

Moses and Jesus are playing golf. Moses steps up to the tee and hits a beautiful shot 250 yards straight down the middle of the fairway. Jesus steps up to the tee and hooks the ball into the trees. Jesus looks up into the heavens, raises his arms, and suddenly the sky darkens. A thunder clap rings out, rain pours down, and a stream rises among the trees. The golf ball floating on top finds its way into the mouth of a fish. Then a bird flies down and takes the fish and the ball out over the green, drops it in the cup for a hole-in-one. Jesus turns to Moses with a satisfied grin, and Moses says, "Look. You wanna play golf or you want to **** around?"
