NASCAR Death Bed

If anyone thinks the manufacturers have been neutered now just wait until spec engines become an option for cup teams. It has to be that way as if VW or Kia want to get into cup they will want to do so quickly and cheaply and what better way than to stick some decals on a spec car and throw in a spec engine?

Vw or kia...are you high?

Childress and Roush, if you consider that they own all or part of the companies that build the motors.

Certainly, my fear, but I think that spec making it all the way to Cup is a stretch. Xfinity? Maybe.

Spec engines were great for IROC and the old ASA series, both are dead and gone now. It would be as popular as the chase and stages.

Key phrase...."both dead and gone now..."

KCMG, an international motorsports group based in Hong Kong that has fielded teams in various formula and sports-car events, will sponsor Matt Tifft at RCR for select Xfinity races this year. #nascar

At speedweeks arca had less than 12k in stands, shootout less than 30k, duels less than 35k, trucks less than 30k and xfinity about 45k. Attendance was down for all races except for the 500. I should have a clearer picture by the end of the week.

Vince Martin article should come out in the next few days. Here's what John Saunders said.
"TV viewership for the historic 20th running of the Daytona 500 proved once again why it is the premier and most significant motorsports event in the world. Despite a decline in rating, the event captured significant viewership peaking at 11.5 million average viewers per minute, and outperforming head-to-head competition with the Olympics. The first five events through Auto Club Speedway viewership for cup events is down consistent with trends at other sports properties. We believe the year-over-year trends mirror the changing consumption patterns seen in broader sports media landscape as TV viewership in general has seen a decline in hub levels."

If Jr's retirement will impact Nascar.
". There may be an impact down the road we just don’t know at this point."

Yeah, I have been posting stick n ball declines and across the board, sports in general continue to decline. Nascar was down 11% last year and the NFL was almost 10% less in viewership.

Don't know about other sports but rsn for basketball is up. The final 4 ratings were up from last year. The championship will most likely be an all-time low.

There may be some other sports that are down year over year but Nascar clearly wins the deathbed award as they have been tanking for 15 years in viewership and attendance. Each race this year has been down 15-20% which represent big losses.

Quite simply there isn’t a dominant driver/personality to get behind anymore. IMO Jimmie Johnson kept the sport going simply because it was him versus the field during his reign of terror similar to what Tiger did. He didn’t move the needle to Tiger’s level (does anyone?) but now much like golf NASCAR has became a bunch of really good drivers fighting each other. While both sports are in terrific shape competitively, your major individual sports (golf, tennis, racing, boxing) have to have that one legend everyone is trying to take down. We don’t have that right now, and that’s why one of these young guys emerging is so important

Monster dumping Nascar is big news as far as bad news goes. Red Bull found out years ago that it was folly to partner with Nascar and evidently Monster came to the same conclusion. Energy Drink companies like non stop action and an edgy product that a young audience follows. Well with Nascar's average age being around 60 and the product about as cool as an August day in Atlanta it is easy to draw the lines.

Sounds like there could be an outright bidding war for Nascar broadcasts rights next go round.

Who..you think Fox, NBC or CBS is going to shell out millions for sport in contraction?

You want me to predict which networks will be in the next TV deal? I would guess there is an 80% likelihood that Fox returns. The relationship and continuity with Fox Sports is strong. The back half of the season deal will either continue to be a hot potato that can be tossed back and forth between NBC Universal and Disney, or it gets carved up differently as it has in the past with TNT's limited participation, or Fox takes the whole thing. The fall portion of the season is fundamentally less attractive in TV terms, and meaningful schedule realignment could occur in the next decade.

The rights fees NASCAR currently receives pay them multiple millions of dollars per hour of televised content. Even factoring for a robust decline, which is unlikely, I am confident the next television contract will reach into the realm of millions.

Ask yourself the question, " do the networks pay out millions to sports that dont get the ratings NASCAR does?
